Cobie Smulders is in the news today as the actress who struck it big with her role as Maria Hill in The Avengers has just signed up for David Wain’s They Came Together. She will be tasked with supporting the leads (Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler) in an homage to romantic comedies that was written by the tandem of Wain and Michael Showalter.
This film centers around Poehler’s character who has her small business threatened by a big corporate development which will be represented on-screen by Rudd. Ed Helms is also in this movie as he will play the love interest opposite Amy Poehler. Additional cast members include Michael Ian Black (Take Me Home Tonight) and Noureen DeWulf (The Babymakers.)
Fans love Smulders for a number of reasons, but I cannot shake the fact that her portrayal of Maria Hill started something much bigger for the How I Met Your Mother Star. For people who saw The Avengers once, they probably were too inundated with pop culture references and big stars to pay attention to her character who effectively was Nick Fury’s number two. Having seen this particular movie multiple times now, I can say that her performance was a lost gem in all the hubbub as during the course of the movie she managed to outrun a tunnel collapse, take damage from a grenade, and save Samuel L. Jackson’s life all while establishing a significant degree of credibility.
I have been personally looking forward to seeing The Avengers sequel which promises to give Smulders a bigger role, and now I am actually excited to see how she does in a low budget rom-com spoof simply because what she does next could prove to be a make or break moment for her. Could she turn into a decade-younger Jennifer Connelly or just someone the world has forgotten twenty years from now?
