Two new movies open nationwide today in the form of Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy. While the former is expected to be a success largely in part to the stellar ensemble that director Adam Shankman has assembled, both films are expected to be duds with moviegoers judging from early reviews.
Rock of Ages is actually getting better reviews than Adam Sandler’s latest effort which is not saying a whole lot, but there seems to be a few good things going on with the rock musical. As expected, that all centers around Tom Cruise and his portrayal of rock legend Stacee Jaxx. Other than that, the film is being called cliche and not entertaining at all outside of a few musical numbers.
Moving on to That’s My Boy, basically nothing good is being said about this movie aside from it possibly being the funniest film in the Adam Sandler catalog in years. Aside from that, reviewers are essentially saying the same thing they always say about Sandler films: “I’m offended by how bad this film is.”
These reviews probably will not matter though as both features are expected to debut over $20 million this weekend. It is actually a breath of fresh air to see non-big budget productions try to recoup their money for a change this summer as the past few weeks have centered around worries of box office duds on initial investments north of $100 million.
