The box office numbers have come out for Friday, June 8, and it shows a big surprise in that Ridley Scott’s Prometheus managed to beat the opening day of Madagascar 3. Many people knew of the possibility, but they really did not expect such a scenario to play out as the Alien prequel grossed $21.4 million to edge out the $20.5 million from DWA’s latest theatrical effort. The following are the top ten of the day with no surprises other than a 60+% drop-off from Snow White.

2. Madagascar 3 – $20.5 M / $20.5 M
3. Snow White and the Huntsman - $7.5 M (-63%) / $83.0 M
4. Men in Black 3 - $4.2 M / $126.2 M
5. The Avengers – $3.3 M / $564.3 M
6. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – 935k / $28.7 M
7. What to Expect When You’re Expecting – 915k / $34.0 M
8. The Dictator – $704k / $53.7 M
9. Battleship – $684k / $58.2 M
10. Moonrise Kingdom – $455k / $2.6 M
Going forward it looks like Prometheus will lose the week with just over $50 million compared to Madagascar’s $60+ million with the former performing below yesterday’s expectations and the latter quite the opposite.
