Lionsgate Shelves ‘Dirty Dancing’ Until 2014

Some of you may recall that Lionsgate had their hearts set on a Dirty Dancing remake which was perhaps spurred on by the success of another 80′s retread via FootlooseWhile the Julianne Hough-lead effort only grossed a shade over $50 million, the movie only cost $20-some million to make inferring profitability and demand for some offerings.

Unfortunately for fans of Dirty Dancing (and 80′s remakes in general,) the project has been officially shelved for another year citing problems with casting.  Kenny Ortega who was the original’s choreographer is slated to direct and the script will still be that of Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk.  Look for the movie to be out in 2014 at the earliest as opposed to the previous release target of July 2013.

The original version of Dirty Dancing starred Patrick Swayze alongside Jennifer Grey under the direction of Emile Ardolino.  The film hit theaters in August of 1987 and went on to gross $214 million at the global box office.
