Universal is letting out a sigh of relief right now as their fantasy flick is performing a whole lot better than expected going into Friday. The opening day now looks to be between the $19 and $21 million range with a big weekend upwards of $55 million.
Now, keep in mind these are very early figures taken before primetime even hits the east coast, but it sure looks like Snow White and the Huntsman is sequel worthy. The price came in under $200 million which is really good for such an effort. This is going to help convince the studio to stay on track with their franchising of this property via screenwriter David Koepp.
Hopefully rookie director Rupert Sanders stays on board because having seen the movie I can say that the visuals he brought to the table more than make up for any shortcomings script wise. It really is a groundbreaking technological performance with the only flaw being the lack of the 3D option, and I can only describe it to someone who has not seen the movie with the following line: “It only took a decade for the industry to catch up to Lord of the Rings visually in the fantasy genre.”
Enough of my own personal bias towards the film. Stay tuned for more updates as the weekend progresses.
