‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Sequel Still On Track

As I have been reporting on the past few weeks, Universal is hell bent on crafting a sequel for Snow White and the Huntsman whether it be a legitimate second effort or a Huntsman spin-off.  Today’s update on the topic brings word that after a week in release the studio is still eyeing the opportunity with David Koepp drafting the feature.  There are however a few new details to report via Deadline that a few of you might find interesting.

The new stuff is that a few of the actors are optioned up for two reprisals including Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth.  They apparently are contractually obligated for at least two more films in the franchise should Universal need them both, but there are certainly rumblings that the studio may want to spin-off the Huntsman character for the purposes of longevity with the series.  I would not count on it though as the 50/50 gender split at the box office means that Stewart may be needed to keep women flocking to the Huntsman saga.

Either way, this film is getting made and the promise is that it will be a better picture.  The excuse for the film’s poor story was that it was rushed in order to compete with Relativity’s Mirror Mirror which starred Julia Roberts in a PG-rated adaptation of Snow White.  It is because of this reason that Universal is not going to blame Rupert Sanders for barely making a profit.  They understand that the first-time director is largely responsible for the one thing going for Snow White and the Huntsman: Its impressive visuals.  That is why the studio is actively recruiting Sanders to helm round two.

Updated: The second paragraph has been rewritten as news came to light that Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth were the ones with options for the film even though Stewart insinuated she might have had a choice in regards to a sequel in earlier comments.
