Weekend Results: ‘Snow White’ Takes Throne From ‘MiB’

This weekend brought with it a refreshing take on the box office report as for the first time in weeks it seems as if Hollywood delivered what they expected.  Despite pessimism going into Friday, Snow White and the Huntsman managed to find a $56.3 million payday which is as much as 40% higher than initial projects.  The number was good enough for top dog, unseating Men in Black III which hauled in $29.3 million in its second week out of the gate bringing its domestic total to $112.3 million.

Not far behind that was The Avengers which continues to show strength now in its fifth week.  Marvel’s latest grossed $20.3 million which was good enough to bring the movie to third on the all-time lists in both domestic and global categories.  Previous position holders were The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II respectively.

Beyond that were a handful of movies below $5 million in the top ten which included Battleship, The Dictator, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Dark Shadows.  None of the big ones (Dictator, Battleship, Dark Shadows) are close to breaking $100 million domestically, but they each have been doing relatively well overseas.
