There is some pretty interesting casting news to report today in regards to Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom. The show has just cast The Expendables’ Terry Crews as Will McAvoy’s (Jeff Daniels) unofficial life coach. Crews is said to be in line for five episodes which is causing EW to proclaim that the character might bleed into the recently announced second season.
This is quite a big role for Crews who has been in the industry for over a decade now. The actor has been in a variety of projects including some Old Spice commercials, but his break probably came with The Expendables two years ago which is accredited with boosting his name recognition substantially. A sequel for that film is due out in August, but beyond that he will pretty much maintain the predictable stream of guest work on the television side of things.
Hopefully for his sake the show will still be watched by time he shows up. A recent ratings report showed that the series may not be adored exactly by HBO subscribers as the 2.1 million viewers from last week turned into 1.7 million on July 1st. While not a huge drop-off, this sort of decline is big enough to mention as it might show that the dust could potentially settle at a number well off the program’s starting point.
