Cable TV Ratings: ‘The Newsroom’ Surges to Viewer Highs, ‘Falling Skies’ Stabilizes

The Newsroom and Falling Skies each rebounded in the ratings this week from their seemingly massive drop-offs.  Perhaps the weekend prior to the July 4th holiday proved to affect some shows more than others as the Aaron Sorkin-created HBO drama is back up over the 2 million viewer mark.  In fact, that show looks to be at a series high with its third episode netting 2.2 million viewers as the pilot episode found only 2.1 million.

In regards to Falling Skies, the sky is definitely not falling as the drama swung up to 3.6 million viewers from 3.4 million the week prior.  While still down from the audience of 4.5 million for the show’s 2012 return, this is a good sign as the fear was that the sci-fi series would continue to lose its audience.  Even so, a cancellation remained very much in doubt; however, big-budget scripted productions need to maintain a certain degree of success beyond the status quo in order to avoid a Terra Nova-like situation.  Reports are beginning to surface that the renewal for year three is coming down relatively soon, so expect an official nod to that in the comings days.

As for True Blood, that series remains pretty untouchable as viewership is still near highs the supernatural drama first achieved two seasons ago.  Many are waiting for the inevitable drop-off, but with numbers staying north of 4 million for this long, that may not happen anytime soon.
