The reviews are starting to come online for Akiva Schaffer’s The Watch as the movie is set to hit theaters less than 24 hours from now. The R-rated comedy enlists Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, and Vince Vaughn as a neighborhood watch group that stumbles upon an alien invasion–something that is not exactly brilliant, but nothing this all-star comedy trio cannot work around. Essentially, that is the problem though. They are expected to turn garbage into gold and the critics are saying that did not happen as the movie is really your classic clock-watcher.
This is oddly reminiscent of what we were hearing about last year’s Change-Up which was another ill-received adult comedy tacked on at the end of summer. The reason this is kind of a big deal is because moviegoers are intolerant of R-rated comedies that lack quality. Time and time again we see that movies that are raunchy just to be raunchy fall flat with audiences and usually it shows in the box office results.
The current Rotten Tomatoes score for The Watch is about 17%, but only 12 reviews have been posted so far. Getting to brass tacks though, the film is definitely not going to recover from that score even though it is still early. Reviewers hate the movie making Jonah Hill’s 21 Jump Street follow-up a dud and proving that the Dodgeball tandem of Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller is not quite what it used to be.
