It has been just six years since audiences last got their taste of Superman via the ill-received Brandon Routh-lead effort, and fans of the comic book icon are already being asked to embrace a new iteration from director Zack Snyder. The feature is simply titled Man of Steel and while the title does not exactly lend itself to a numerically ordered host of sequels, we realize that is ‘acceptable’ upon recognition that Warner Bros. has tapped The Dark Knight trilogy-director Christopher Nolan to produce this effort.
While there are obvious concerns about Snyder pulling behind-the-camera duty (mostly due to the much-despised Sucker Punch,) it is somewhat comforting to say the least to see Nolan is involved with the project. He actually co-wrote the script with David S. Goyer before jumping to finish his Batman series, but ultimately that is not what today is about. Rather it is about our first look at actual footage of the film.
Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Christopher Meloni, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane all have roles in this feature which is causing us to believe that this is the Superman movie fans have always wanted otherwise casting would have stopped at the word Cavill. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope it turns out to be the case rather than look back on this moment as the time when Superman lost yet another decade due to franchise mismanagement.
Man of Steel released into theaters nationwide on June 14.
[Note: The first trailer has Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) providing the voice over while the second features one from Jor-El (Russell Crowe)]
