The word is out on David Koepp’s Premium Rush and it is a hit with critics. This movie about a NYC bike messenger who crosses paths with the wrong people is being called a great end-of-summer action flick. In fact, the movie is far less setup than action which is a bit surprising to a lot of people who expected that the overall plot would be what sells this movie.
Nonetheless, critics love it and are calling all parties involved pretty genius. There is a lot of love being thrown at Boardwalk Empire star Michael Shannon especially who plays the film’s principal antagonist. That is a bit surprising as well, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt is getting some credit too, as presumed to be the case.
The naysayers are a bit upset with the movie’s premise. They sound like they did not buy in initially and solidified their stance going into the effort, but that is clearly understandable given Premium Rush’s status as a film centered on high-octane bicycle riding. Really, there is nothing specific that these outliers are pointing out other than the fact that they feel the action overtakes story too much.
It was a bit surprising to see a few of the blogs actually predict doom and gloom for this movie’s reception earlier in the week because Premium Rush is directed by David Koepp who is one of the premiere screenwriters in Hollywood. His last offering, Ghost Town, proved to be very capable which begs the questions is to why so many people expected this new thriller of his to strike out hard. This is definitely a solid early fall offering that oddly reminds us of the Chris Evans-starrer Cellular from eight years back, so it might be worth checking out.
Stars of the film include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dania Ramirez, Aasif Mandvi, Michael Shannon, and Jamie Chung. Premium Rush releases into theaters nationwide on August 24.
