New ‘The Impossible’ Trailer: Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor in a Tsunami Movie

There is a new trailer out for The Impossible–a movie that tackles the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami in South Asia.  It is much more than some random disaster movie that we are used to seeing or even Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter with a gimmick.  This film tells the true story of a family divided by the natural disaster.  The Impossible is being marketed as a human story of survival in the toughest of circumstances and the lengths of which people will go through to reunite.  Juan Antonio Bayonia’s film is also being labeled as an uplifting tale of compassion, courage, and kindness.

The following trailer has all that on full display, but it may be a bit heavy on the tsunami angle of things which might go against what the film is all about.  Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts are presumably amazing, but it really is tough to tell because they are too busy selling that something major just happened to shatter their world.  You will probably have to catch the feature on the big screen to know for sure if they deliver because I doubt their acting chops will be played up in promotion given the ‘true story’ source material which always looks better in the public’s eye.

Starring in the film is Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor who took direction from Juan Antonio Bayona.  The Impossible releases into theaters on December 21.
