After having a kid, Natalie Portman is back in full blown movie making mode and that includes being thought of in various wish list projects. Today’s revelation concerning the Academy Award-winner is that Fox Searchlight is in hot pursuit of reenlisting the actress (she won her Oscar in the indie studio’s Black Swan) for the starring role in their upcoming Jackie Kennedy movie.
Under the title Jackie, the movie will basically cover the former first lady during the aftermath of the JFK assassination. Deadline is saying right now that the script from Noah Oppenheim is solid enough to attract Portman’s interest, but her involvement will be contingent on who the studio taps to helm the project. Many A-list talents behind the camera have been interested in the past including Darren Aronofsky and even Steven Spielberg for a time. Aronofsky is very busy with his biblical epic Noah at the moment, so he probably will not be lured back for a Black Swan reunion, but this is definitely an indicator that someone capable will get the reins of the project.
The assumption is that the movie will seek to take advantage of the short window offered for the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination. On that front, there are already multiple projects that will possibly cast their own Jackie Kennedys within the next year. For those of you interested, those projects are mentioned at the bottom of this post under the ‘Related’ heading.
Now, it is important to be aware that the studio may want to rush on this, but Natalie is not. The actress has been rumored for a part alongside a US ambassador to Nazi Germany movie and she is set to star in the western movie Jane Got a Gun opposite Michael Fassbender. She is currently filming the sequel to Thor subtitled The Dark World as well which means she currently has a vast amount of projects being thrown at her. As a result, this story could eventually turn out to be unfruitful.
