Gerard Butler to Play ‘Death Match’ Goalie in WWII Soccer Movie

Coming off of the worst nationwide opener of his career ($2.4 million,) Gerard Butler has added another film to follow-up Chasing Mavericks.  Joining the actor’s post-surfer slate is a film called Dynamo based on a novel by Andy Dougan.  The plot has Butler playing an all-star goalie by the name of Nikolai Trusevich who helped lead his Ukrainian soccer team versus a Nazi super team during World War II.  This was a match set up to demonstrate Aryan superiority and is known throughout history as The Death Match as ten of the team’s players were sent to concentration camps less than two weeks after they won.

The screenplay comes from producer Eli Richbourg who worked with Butler last on The Phantom of the Opera thus the connection.  There is no director at this time, but a search in underway by producers Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) and Beau Flynn (Red Dawn.)

Dynamo is just a handful of projects with the 300 star attached to at the moment.  The more imminent releases include Playing for KeepsMovie 43, and the recently dated Olympus Has Fallen with the last one being the highest profile of the trio.  That particular effort has Butler playing a secret service agent tasked with protecting a White House and President under attack.  It is one of two such features Hollywood currently has in development with Channing Tatum leading the other one.
