At the end of last month, news finally broke that Marc Webb would be returning to helm the sequel for his successful Spider-Man reboot. Now, we are hearing the first bit of information concerning the project–something not exactly shocking considering the film is already 19 months out from release. Today’s update is that Sony is about to cast a very talented actress for the role of Mary Jane Watson in the form of Shailene Woodley.
Of course, most people do not know who this is, but she nearly stole the show from Oscar-winner George Clooney as the actor’s daughter in The Descendants last year which is good enough to grab our attention. If early talks go well, she will be filling a role that once belonged to Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi era. This is a part that essentially set the actress for life in terms of name recognition.
Woodley first hailed from television in shows like The Secret Life of the American Teenager and The O.C. She also showed up on a variety of other small screen programs through the years via countless guest spots.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield who will each be reprising their roles for the blockbuster from Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Look for the film to hit theaters on May 2, 2014.
