‘Colbert Reports’ Kicks Off ‘The Hobbit’ Week with Gandalf Interview

Stephen Colbert kicked off The Hobbit week in style as The Report opened with a doctored introduction to fit the style and viewers received their first look at a tweaked set.  No one who knows the Comedy Central star’s fascination with Lord of the Rings is shocked by any of this as he spoke on many occasions about his love for Middle-Earth in-depth.  According to Peter Jackson, as Colbert reminds us at the start of Monday’s program, the man is the biggest Tolkien geek around plain and simple.

The first guest for these special episodes was Sir Ian McKellen is best known as Gandalf in the series of films.  He is also accredited with portraying Magneto in the original X-Men trilogy which did receive a nod.  For the most part, things stayed on The Hobbit, but a more interesting portion of the interview probably was the actor’s open discussion of his sexuality–something many viewers were likely unaware of until today.  Hit the jump for the view.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey lands in theaters nationwide on December 14.
