Much has been said over these past few months in regards to AMC’s money grubbing. The company went public on the stock exchange not too long ago, so the pressure was there by the network group to maximize profits which primarily means upping their subscription rates. Roughly 75% of all cable revenue comes from this source which complicates matters when the pot needs to be grown.
AMC still ranks as one of the most widely distributed channels on pay television; however, that has always been a product of its cheap cost that has historically been below 20 cents per month. In the past few years, things in that regard have changed substantially as shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead have created a must-see television vibe that the network has never before experienced which is pretty much the cause of all the hubbub.
Today’s news is actually a high note when it comes to these matters as it was announced that AT&T and AMC have resolved a dispute regarding extension of their partnership. AMC reportedly wanted twice what they previously were entitled too which AT&T was unwilling to give. While the official numbers are being kept under wraps, it would not exactly be a shock to some if the cable network is finally breaching the 30 cent per month mark for the company’s top channel despite mediocre ratings outside of Sunday evening.
Here is a statement from AT&T released earlier today on the matter acknowledging that the two sides have come to agreement:
“It was important to us on behalf of our U-verse TV customers to come to a positive resolution as quickly as possible. We appreciate everyone’s willingness to make that happen, working diligently over the weekend, so customers can continue to enjoy the programming they love on U-verse, the fastest growing TV service in the country,” said Jeff Weber, President of Content and Advertising Sales, AT&T.
Now, everyone’s full attention is back to the ongoing Dish Network-AMC feud. Dish actually just took AMC offline the other day, so expect something soon because one of the network’s biggest draws in the form of Breaking Bad returns for its fifth season on Sunday, July 15.
