This is a story that not a whole lot of people probably paid attention to on Friday (for obvious reasons.) David O. Russell’s period follow-up to Silver Linings Playbook entitled American Hustle was unable to shoot on Friday due to the city of Boston being in total lockdown (Bradley Cooper used the time to visit Marathon Bombing victims in the hospital.) Well, that break is now over as things are expected to go back on track Monday as if none of it ever happened.
The reason this is something that might have captured more headlines than the delay of a standard production was the possibility that filming could be thrown off schedule. Such a thing would have been a minor tragedy for Hollywood as the talent tied up in this Abscam-based project is enormous. Stars of the film include Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Robert DeNiro, Jennifer Lawrence, and Bradley Cooper.
American Hustle releases in theaters on Christmas Day.
Not long after word dropped Friday that Steven Spielberg was backing off of WB’s Moses project, there seems to have been substantial movement on the competition’s end. Not only is Ridley Scott still serious about directing the pic, titled Exodus, but Fox is reportedly courting Christian Bale for the leading role. Deadline broke the story earlier today at which point they expressed caution at this time, but who would want to pass up a chance to work with the team behind American Gangster? On that end, the crime drama’s writer Steve Zaillian just completed rewrites and the project looks good to go once Ridley becomes available after The Counselor.
The Counselor is a thriller that the director has been working on for some time. This is still in post, but it shot last year. Stars of the film include Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, John Leguizamo, and Breaking Bad’s Dean Norris. A release is set for November 15. Now, Ridley is also attached to helm the pilot episode of Showtime’s modern-set series The Vatican starring Kyle Chandler. It remains unclear when he will fit that in, but television does not take nearly as much time so that gig should remain intact.
Last year it was Snow White, this year it is the White House, and next year it looks to be all about visiting the white peaks of Mount Everest. Very cliche stuff indeed, but I did not write any of it. Hollywood did, and that is what brings us to today’s big story–there will be a second Everest film coming down the pipe, this one with Christian Bale.
Deadline broke the story this morning that The Dark Knight Rises star will be leading the cast of Everest which has him attempting to survive blinding storm-like conditions during a climb to the top of Everest in 1996. This is based on true accounts remembered in Jon Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air, and that is all we know at this time aside from the director, Baltasar Kormakur, who was chosen from helming a similar-style survival pic entitled The Deep that no one saw…because it was in Swedish.
As alluded to earlier, Everest is the second such movie currently in development. Tom Hardy recently found himself attached to play the man who first scaled the mountain in a 1920′s period feature under the same name. Jumper’s Doug Liman is directing that one for Sony Pictures, and while both offerings can be crazy different the bigger question looms as to whether the mountain is big enough for both Batman and Bane.
Confirmation of what we already knew well in advance has finally dropped today. David O. Russell’s follow-up to Silver Linings Playbook will star Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, and Amy Adams. There is somewhat of a bombshell though in that Christian Bale is on board the project as well. It was widely presumed a while back by some that the Dark Knight star might be out of the project, but that is certainly not the case.
For those first hearing of this untitled drama, it is known in the industry as ‘the Abscam movie.’ It tells the “true story of a notorious financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime (Adams), who were forced to work with an out of control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters, and politicians.” Needless to say, there will be a lot of attention on this one going forward as the last time Bale and O. Russell teamed up, it resulted in Oscar gold. Continue Reading
Christian Bale is in the midst of booking his follow-ups to The Dark Knight Rises and it looks like he is about to climb aboard Todd Field’s The Creed of Violence. This particular based-on-a-book feature would set the former Batman player in early 20th century Mexico as a criminal named Rawbone.
In the picture, the character finds himself in the hands of the Bureau of Investigation which pretty much offers him a pardon should he deliver a truck full of weapons to Mexican oil fields under the command of Agent John Lourdes. Things get interesting when it turns out that Lourdes is someone that Rawbone knows from deep within his past. Continue Reading
There is yet another Dark Knight Rises clip circulating the net today. This one comes courtesy of Morgan Freeman’s appearance on The Tonight Show although it did not appear the broadcaster put that section of the interview online. Nonetheless, it surfaced on YouTube which is why we get to see Morgan Freeman’s Lucius Fox revealing Batman’s new aerial vehicle to Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne. Continue Reading
If you are one of those people who cannot wait for The Dark Knight Rises to hit theaters later this month, the following featurette is a must-see. It has the movie’s incredible cast and crew discussing the film’s backdrop and characters. Pretty much it serves as a video version of those 50 pages of production notes the internet has been talking about this week.
Enjoy your in-depth look at The Dark Knight Rises. The Christopher Nolan-directed blockbuster will release into theaters nationwide on July 20.
Movies with a title that includes the adjective ‘American’ tend to do rather well, and that is why today’s news about another such film caught our attention. A drama labelled American Bullshit is in the works with a cast that includes the likes of Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale. Furthermore, this new offering from Hollywood will serve to reunite Bale with his director from the Oscar-winning feature The Fighter for which the actor received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
David O. Russell’s American Bullshit is about Abscam–an anti-corruption sting operation that lead to the conviction of a senator and several congressmen in the late 1970′s. The most juicy thing about this story is that the FBI enlisted a convicted con artist to help direct the operation, so expect that to be well represented in the feature film.
As for the casting of the movie, Christian Bale has the proven dramatic chops as previously mentioned, but Bradley Cooper is a bit of an unknown to audiences. Fortunately, the actor is starring in a drama directed by Russell due out later in the year called The Silver Linings Playbook. It is hard to imagine Russell would grab a reunion so quickly with him if he did not quite cut it in the genre. With that being said, we do expect good things from both features moving forward.
The first full trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was released online today, and a few things come to mind. One, it looks unique from the Chris Nolan-directed previous installments, and two, it reveals the film will have a bit of an Occupy Wall Street-esque theme which has actually been hinted at for a while. Enjoy your first real look at the book end of Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The movie will hit theaters on July 20, 2012. Continue Reading
Here is the theatrical trailer for The Flowers of War starring Christian Bale. The movie just became a hell of a lot more high-profile seeing how Batman himself might get banned from the country after trying to meet with a blind lawyer/activist under house arrest. That probably will not happen though considering what this movie means for China’s movie industry, but let’s face it, if you want a movie industry in your country you need to accept a certain degree of barrier pushing liberalism. The Zhang Yimou-directed film set in the Second Sino-Japanese War in the year 1937 opens on December 23. Continue Reading
