Denis Leary Plugs Christmas Book on ‘The Daily Show’

Jon Stewart had comedian Denis Leary return to the program last night.  The comic-turned-actor is out promoting his new Christmas book that the network forced on him.  Naturally, Stewart had a ton of fun at this and the lack of content in the literary work, but Leary justified it all by saying that the proceeds will go to benefit firefighters–something he cares passionately about as indicated by his six-season-long stint on the FX series Rescue Me. Denis Leary Dishes on Sleep Walking Run-In with Kardashian Clan

Denis Leary earned a lot of brownie points for his portrayal of Captain Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man.  He literally was one of the best supporting actors in the entire movie despite a cast list that included Sally Field and Martin Sheen, so for the meantime we are going to pretend as if he did not steal material from Louis C.K. long ago and not hate on him.

Lucky for us, it paid off as watching his appearance on Conan last night was one of the most amusing things I have seen from Leary in a while.  He told two stories with the second being far better.  The former Rescue Me star went on a rant about how he was on the same plane as the Kardashian family on which he apparently freaked out, attacking a U.S. air marshal in the process. Denis Leary Talks ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Stunt Work on ‘Leno’

The Amazing Spider-Man has been given a lot of critical recognition over the past few weeks for its stellar ensemble, and much to the audience’s surprise that included stand-up comedian Denis Leary.  The actor was cast the role of Captain Stacy in the Marc Webb-directed reboot in which he harnessed his dramatic credentials developed through the years on the set of Rescue Me, resulting in some fantastic scenes with Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker.

Naturally, that was a topic of conversation last night when Leary took to The Tonight Show as part of his promotional tour for Ice Age: Continental Drift.  The interview opened with discussion of Spider-Man and closed with a clip of the new Ice Age movie in which he reprises as a saber-tooth tiger named Diego. FX Green Lights Comedy Pilot From Denis Leary

It turns out the Denis Leary’s partnership with FX did not end with Rescue Me.  The cable network has announced today that they are continuing to pursue comedic options (probably to find a suitable partner for Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management,) and the channel has gone as far as to order a pilot in the genre from Leary and his producing partner Jim Serpico.  This particular series is called Bronx Warrants, and it centers on a group of warrant detectives thus the title.

Here is the official press release with more details and a quote from Leary describing the show.

LOS ANGELES, June 20, 2012 – FX is getting back into business with Rescue Me producers Denis Leary and Jim Serpico, placing an order for the comedy pilot Bronx Warrants, announced Eric Schrier, Head of Series Development for FX and Executive Vice President of FX Productions.

Bronx Warrants was created by Dean Lorey (Arrested DevelopmentMy Wife and Kids) who also serves as Executive Producer.  Denis Leary and Jim Serpico are Executive Producers and Tom Sellitti is Co-Executive Producer. Bronx Warrants is based on the real life exploits of David Joglar and Richard Wetzel who are Co-Producers. Bronx Warrants is produced by FX Productions.

“We’ve enjoyed a great relationship with Denis, Jim and Tom through seven years of Rescue Me and I believe they found the perfect project to continue that relationship,” said Schrier. “Dean Lorey has taken this unique police squad and created a hilarious and surprising world of characters and situations.”
Bronx Warrants is a comedy revolving around a group of errant warrant detectives in the Bronx assigned to arrest individuals with outstanding warrants.  With bonuses paid out for each “body” they bring in, the detectives are out to get rich rather than dole out justice.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Denis Leary, Jim Serpico and the great team at FX,” said Dean Lorey. “We loved this show from the second real life Bronx Warrants cops David Joglar and Richard Wetzel shared their insane exploits with us and we can’t wait to get shooting.”

Denis Leary added, “I speak for everyone at Apostle when I say it’s great to be welcomed back into the FX family where we hope to make a laugh-out-loud half hour and – even more importantly – use the network’s juice to sneak into the Emmy gifting suites and come away with many bags of shiny swag.”

Leary, Serpico and Sellitti and their Apostle Pictures produced FX’s Emmy® and Golden Globe® award nominated hit drama Rescue Me, which also received the 2012 Television Academy Honors Award, and they also produced the critically acclaimed comedy series The Job for ABC.
