‘Bourne Legacy’ Opens Below Matt Damon Average, But Beats Hollywood Estimates

The studio estimates have come in and it is official:  Jeremy Renner has delivered the goods as The Bourne Legacy debuted over $40 million.  While this is a bit behind its immediate predecessors, the gimmick and leading men were both changed which had many suspecting an entry closer to $30 million.  However, the last two Matt Damon-led installments of the series debuted north of $50 million, creating an aura of disappointment.

Given that this was Tony Gilroy’s directorial debut for Bourne (he previously only wrote them) in combination with the circumstances mentioned, not achieving such a feat seemed like an inevitability especially in light of the Aurora theater shootings last month–an event that is being blamed for a 10-20% contraction in overall box office revenue.  It might also be worth mentioning that the competition was rather tough because right now there are currently three PG-13 big-budget actioners at the box office. ‘Bourne Legacy’ Expectations Lowered After $14 Mil Friday, ‘Campaign’ Impresses with $10 Mil Debut

Numbers are already being revised down from those early box office estimates that hit the web yesterday as Friday’s results show a much bleaker picture for America’s top movie: The Bourne Legacy.  The fourth installment of the Bourne saga hit theaters yesterday and it definitely looked like a sure fire bet to breach $40 million for the weekend.  Now, Hollywood is not so sure as its Friday take came in at $14 million as opposed to the $18 million that the industry initially anticipated.

While that is still good enough for number one, it is going to make a $45+ million weekend nearly impossible baring some sort of miracle.  As to what exact happened, nobody knows for sure even though speculation has the Olympics possibly impacting these figures once primetime hit. Continue Reading

Watch Steve Carell Improvise Characters on ‘Conan’

Steve Carell has a new movie out.  This time around he will play second fiddle to Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones as the couple’s marriage counselor trying to help their long-lasting relationship go a little bit further.  The romantic comedy is already out in theaters, but ahead of its first weekend the former Office alum went to Conan to help spread the word.

The actor did a few of his improvised characters on the spot (including a shy mobster) and talked about his first jobs.  It is very much the former that steals the show. Continue Reading

Critics Love Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones in ‘Hope Springs’

Meryl Streep does not need big budget special effects to draw audience and critical recognition and nothing showcases that more than her latest movie Hope Springs.  The movie about an older couple seeking marriage counseling advice opens in theaters nationwide today and the reviews are in:  It’s a winner.

Critics are definitely digging the Vanessa Taylor-scripted effort from Marley & Me director David Frankel.  The film is being called emotionally honest and major props are being given to its stars, especially Tommy Lee Jones who appears to have nearly stolen the show.  All-in-all, this is technically a sex comedy which is never really too appealing to the masses, but the tandem appears to have sold it very well with help from a capable script that does not lean on the topic too much.
