Miss House? I do, too, but it is not coming back (and even so its best days are long gone.) Here is something that should quench your thirst though as Hugh Laurie has a new film coming out called Mr. Pip. A release date is yet to be set.
Update 3/11/13: It looks like it was not meant to be for Hugh Laurie as big screen favorite John Malkovich has landed the role as Blackbeard in NBC’s Crossbones after the House alum passed. This is a ten-episode direct to series program, so this will end up on broadcast eventually. Since it has been in development for over a year already, we anticipate a push as the Peacock likely wants to explore their period pirate drama sooner rather than later. Hit the jump for the original piece which had us (and undoubtedly others) very excited about Laurie’s return to the TV drama. Continue Reading
House actor Hugh Laurie has a new film coming out next month called The Oranges, so the actor is ramping up a press tour to promote the project. This Julian Farino-directed project has the former crippled television doctor in a dramedy as a guy who becomes romantically involved with his best friend’s daughter–an interesting situational comedy setup that fans of the thespian are eager to see especially considering Laurie will be diving back into his sketch comedy roots for this one.
Needless to say, that was a major topic of conversation when the actor took to Jimmy Fallon Friday night which may shed light on how House managed to keep such a dark drama light-hearted all those years. He also talked about the movie, screened its first clip, and played a game of Cricket Home Run Derby with the host. Continue Reading
One of the more interesting low-key projects out there right now is the family-feuding dramedy The Oranges that features two very close families. The kicker is that one day Hugh Laurie’s character David Walling enters in a romantic relationship with his neighbor and best friend’s daughter which should add a high degree of situational humor. While it was not originally clear, this is certainly an R-rated comedy thus today’s red-band trailer reveal.
This is certainly a treat for those who witnessed the first trailer and were expecting something a bit more light-hearted. Not only do we see new footage, but also a closer look at how David Walling gets involved with Leighton Meester’s Nina Ostroff. We also get to hear some vulgarity from Allison Janney at the end which is flat out awesome. Continue Reading
There is some sour news to report on for those of you looking forward to seeing Dr. House go head-to-head with RoboCop. Hugh Laurie has either dropped out of the picture or has been dropped according to Variety’s Jeff Sneider. Any case , he will not be doing it anymore which many will find very disappointing. The prevailing theory at this point is that script problems caused negotiations to fall apart, but keep in mind that Laurie was at one point the highest paid thespian on television at $400,000 an episode. Hugh Laurie’s film career is about to get a sizable boost by his first non-animated feature appearance since 2008′s Street Kings. There is a movie coming down the pipe from Julian Farino (The Office, Entourage) which stars the actor as the patriarch of the Walling family. More specifically, the House actor plays a cradle robber who enters into an affair with his best friend’s daughter. This provides huge and hilarious ramifications for two suburban families on Orange Drive.
The movie is meant to be a rom-com, but it more so appears like a classic indie dramedy that some might find much more appealing. On top of that, the cast is quite palatable as it includes Allison Janney (The Help,) Adam Brody (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,) Oliver Platt (X-Men: First Class,) Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl,) and Catherine Keener (Cyrus.) Many loyal fans to the Fox medical drama centered around a Vicodin addicted diagnostician were dismayed to hear the news yesterday evening that House would by going the way of the dodo by season’s end. Despite its ability to deliver reasonably acceptable ratings, the cancellation came as no surprise to industry watchers who have followed a downward trend in both the show’s quality and viewership which began nearly three years ago.
If it is still doing decent numbers, than why cancel it? The answer is simply that the show got too big for its britches. When it premiered back in 2004, House revolved around four relatively unknown actors and a few recurring supporting roles which resulted in a low overhead. As the series grew in popularity, so did the production costs. Those sidebar characters received a lot more screen time, and the show’s backdrop progressed beyond that of a few rooms in a hospital. When that happened, salaries soared for not just Hugh Laurie, but everyone involved including the show’s producers.
Now that the show is back to series’ low ratings, Fox cannot afford such a production. Contracting House back to its early levels may result in a further loss of viewership, and its highly unlikely that the cast and crew would take the substantial pay cuts necessary to ensure the medical drama’s survival. In fact, the problems are so severe that even with a ratings bump from a Lisa Edelstein return (Cuddy), the show might have still faced the axe from its broadcast home.
Its important to read between the lines on this one which appears to be mostly fluff, but apparently House star Hugh Laurie is not about to jump into another television gig after the long-running Fox medical drama ends. Continue Reading
