People in the media must be really sick of American Idol after dominated television for much of the last decade because the major story of the spring has been the demise of the long-running series and nobody has been covering it in the mainstream. The talent competition show might as well have gone extinct as its 3.0 18-49′s is a soft comparison to the 5.0′s and 6.0′s it brought in not so long ago. Not being a viewer myself, I was a bit amazed that Fox would sit on their hands and not try to do anything to “fix” viewership. Maybe there was something I was missing.
Well, apparently not as Fox reportedly tried their hand at a coup that failed miserably. The broadcaster was all set to replace Mariah Carey with Jennifer Lopez. Yes, Jennifer Lopez the woman who abandoned the show responsible for her career resurgence thinking that all sorts of film deals would come her way. It did not happen as the pop star was fading fast which explains why she would 180 on her stance of wanting nothing to do with American Idol.
That said, the deal clearly did not go through because of one reason: Mariah Carey lawyer’d up and that was that. The network backer of American Idol did not want a battle that would undoubtedly drag out bad press for the series for a very long time. What they want to do is get out of this season alive and rip off the band aid of Mariah without much afterthought. Make no doubt about it, that will be happening although it will not occur until the end of the season at which point Jennifer Lopez will likely come in as a replacement for her third turn on the judge’s panel.
It has been a while since Jennifer Lopez has shown off her acting chops, but the singer-turned-feature star has decided to come back into focus. Her first leading role since the Idol gig is an actioner called Parker which she has been out promoting since last week. Tuesday night’s stop landed the Maid in Manhattan star on The Daily Show where she talked about a number of things including the Beyonce lip syncing controversy. Lopez sided with Beyonce by comparing the Inauguration performance to Whitney Houston at the Super Bowl. She also brought up her invite to the White House which she did not accept as well as her return to the movie industry after spending a lot of time away. Continue Reading
Jennifer Lopez is quitting American Idol. On the day following Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler’s exit, Lopez broke the news via a spokesperson to the Associated Press; however, we are yet to hear some official confirmation from Fox leaving me to believe that there is still a figure the broadcaster can throw out to get her to change her mind. Hopefully, the AP report proves valid because Jennifer Lopez’s abuse of the media to up her salary is pretty obnoxious.
This news follows the actress’ call-in interview via Ryan Seacrest’s radio show where she did not flat out say she was done, but the singer certainly implied it. The pop star is said to be resuming other elements of her career which are presumably more lucrative than the $10-15 million she receives annually from Idol. Hit the jump for the radio call-in interview.
