Months ago, a trailer hit the web for the Rupert Sanders adaptation of Snow White entitled Snow White and the Huntsman. A lot of us did not expect such a blockbuster caliber effort after reading about its gritty, more male-oriented backdrop; however, it delivered on many fronts including the one that counts–bringing an incredible performance out of Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron. Snow White and the Huntsman is set to hit theaters early next month, and Snow White herself made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday evening to promote it. Snow White and the Huntsman comes out in about a month’s time, so Kristen Stewart took to Leno last night to build a little public awareness for the blockbuster. It may be a bit early, but big things are expected from the Rupert Sanders-directed feature at the box office and the actress needs to navigate around her busy schedule. Some promotion is probably better than no promotion especially when this is a potential sequel-spawning effort that could easily replace The Twilight Saga in her life which wraps with Break Dawn Part II.
Here is Stewart’s appearance where she talked about her parents’ Hollywood occupations and discusses what makes Snow White and the Huntsman a bit more appealing than the Disney adaptation.
With early box office tracking showing big numbers for Snow White and the Huntsman, word has it that Universal is about to pull the trigger on a sequel to the fairy tale adaptation with director Rupert Sanders returning to the helm. The movie franchise stars Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth in the title roles as the duo look to turn the tables on the evil queen played by Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron.
Part of the early buzz surrounding this property is due to the cross-over stars from some other anticipated blockbusters due out later in the year. Charlize Theron will co-star in Ridley Scott’s epic sci-fi feature Prometheus, and Chris Hemsworth stars alongside a superhero ensemble in The Avengers which is expected to shatter a whole lot of box office records when it debuts next month. Assuming Hemsworth and Theron each receive bumps preceding the release of Snow White and the Huntsman, the early box office estimates will undoubtedly rise from the $50-60 million opening range that is currently being suggested.
As for the specific news that brought this to our attention, the studio is currently in discussions with David Koepp to draft the franchise’s second outing. The writer has worked on a whole lot of big projects over the years including Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, and just recently Men in Black III, so audiences should be relatively pleased by the selection.
On June 1st, the second Snow White adaptation of the year will hit theaters and this one aims to be quite a bit more epic than the first. The Kristen Stewart-lead feature is called Snow White and the Huntsman–a title that gives a nod to the plot’s integral ‘huntsman’ character played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Charlize Theron is the queen.
This is interesting. Despite the fact that rival Snow White feature Mirror Mirror will hit theaters a full two months prior to Snow White and the Huntsman, Universal has already sent out the stars of the latter to lay the groundwork for the prospective blockbuster which will release in early June. I was a bit surprised to see this myself, but it all makes sense considering at the end of this month a far different tale of Snow White will be told starring Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, and Lily Collins. Here is the interview Matt Lauer had on Today earlier this morning with Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart.
Later this year, the low-budget drama On the Road will hit theaters, and it will likely go down as two things–another Kristen Stewart movie that showcases the actress is much more than a product of Twilight as well as another great road film from Walter Salles who also directed 2004′s The Motorcycle Diaries. Aside from that, it is certainly worth mentioning that the cast extends itself from a Stewart-lead affair as Steve Buscemi, Elisabeth Moss, Kristen Dunst, and Amy Adams all have roles in the feature. This movie’s genre may not be for everyone, but it definitely will impressive a large crowd of movie buffs if the trailer’s tone speaks to On the Road’s overall quality.
Word has it that Akira has been shut down. The live-action, big-budget outing to star Kristen Stewart has been plagued from the start by concerns about the property’s overall strength, and once again Warner Bros. is balking at going forward with the project at this time as it stands. I am seeing a variety of unique reports on the story and they all seem to mention that the $90 million still might not be slim enough for the movie despite coming down from $230 million initially; however, others are saying the budget may not be problem at all as instead it is the script that is blocking the film from being made. Either way, production on Akira has been halted and no one knows for sure if WB has the stomach anymore to push it through to the finish line.
