Box Office Speculation: ‘Madagascar 3′ to Beat ‘Rock of Ages’ and Adam Sandler

There are a whole lot of conflicting reports being thrown about as to what analysts perceive to be the weekend’s ultimate rankings, but it looks like Madagascar 3 should come away with the top spot. Preliminary projections have the film grossing beyond $30 million in its second weekend, beating Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages and Sean Anders’ That’s My Boy which will both be making their box office debut today.

In regards to the new films, people are differing on the issue as to whether either of them could even pass the $30 million mark. It seems as if everybody has Rock of Ages about $5 million on top of Adam Sandlers’ newest effort mostly because he chose to go rated ‘R.’ This is seen as a return to form for the actor who originally rose to fame with his adult stand-up material, but his audience nowadays is firmly in the PG-13 category. Nobody expects this movie to find large returns and if anything, they figure it could bomb hard.

Other films are likely to fall the standard 30-50% depending on the movie. It would appear that some believe The Avengers will finally start showing some retention this week and might only drop 20%. If the Joss Whedon-directed blockbuster misses the top five, it will not be by much.

Chris Rock has a new film to promote in the third installment of the Madagascar series. The comic was on Jimmy Fallon last night to get the word out even though many of the franchise’s mind are probably sleeping. We admire the actor’s efforts though as it is always fun to see him appear on the talk show circuit.

This time around he talked about the economy, his new movie, and more.

Chris Rock Calls President Obama a Zebra on ‘Today’

Chris Rock took to The Today Show Thursday morning to drum up some buzz for the third Madagascar film. Needless to say, that was not the only thing on Rock’s mind during the interview with Ann Curry.

It is pretty easy to forget sometimes that Rock used to be a big time, boundary pushing comic, but that was on full display this morning thanks in part to his comments in regards to President Obama’s race. He quickly covered his tracks though as he implied the comment was made in regards to Obama’s appeal to both white and black people.

Other topics of conversation included character progression and Madagascar’s Afro circus.
