It has been a while since we heard anything on Man of Steel, so it probably is worth passing along the latest television promo for the movie. WB is pushing ticket pre-sales aggressively thus the purpose of today’s spot.
It is more of the same with the third television spot for Man of Steel, but we acknowledge it nonetheless. This film is shaping up to be a heavily-hyped event even as audiences still vaguely remember the disappointment from the franchise’s last outing. Nonetheless, a marketing campaign is shrouding the pic in a great deal of love which I might add was how I felt with the last one. Why is this going to be different from seven years ago? Well, for one, we have Christopher Nolan producing. While that is not quite the same as directing, he is being hands on and the real guy at the helm, Zack Snyder, has been vocal enough in the press to help quiet some of our worries. What did he say exactly? There will be more action than the last time out and…perhaps more importantly…zero mentions of Superman’s only weakness: kryptonite. Continue Reading
We have ourselves a new poster today for Man of Steel. It is pretty generic by Superman movie standards so in a way you will be asking yourself if you saw it before. Nonetheless, here it is as Henry Cavill flies mightily. His first turn wearing a cape arrives on June 14.
I originally did not plan on taking on every one of the coming television promos for Man of Steel, but Warner Bros. believes they have the goods with this film so that changes things. Odds are the plan is to give this one a marketing campaign not too dissimilar to the one just seen for Marvel Studio’s Iron Man 3 or last year’s The Dark Knight Rises in which most marketing materials had something special to add. In this case, we get to see Henry Cavill’s Superman screaming, yelling, or something to that effect. We also get a few new shots of scenes previously on display. Continue Reading
Just because Man of Steel is going to be another $200+ million domestic performance by a Superman movie, it is worth pointing out the tricks Warner Bros. are pulling out of their hats to ensure that happens. Today’s news is that starting May 18, Walmart will exclusively offer sneak peek tickets in checkout aisles for 7 pm showings on Thursday, June 13th, the eve of the film’s official release. What we do not know exactly is if people will have to trek to their local retailer to pick these up (that is not likely the case.) Even so, it would appear that the blue chip company has a leg up on things when Man of Steel hits DVD in the fall which would be their bread and butter with such a device. These early tickets not only give fans a copy of a digital comic book written by the blockbuster’s scribe David Goyer, but also gives them the opportunity to pre-order the movie’s Blu-Ray combo pack or digital download. In other words, it is pull-marketing for those who are not familiar with the Fandangos of the world (or the internet for that matter.)
Boardwalk Empire actor and Man of Steel villain Michael Shannon is about to go viral today as the actor teamed with Funny or Die for their take on a recurring concept that first hit the net just a few days ago. He is essentially reading a very real sorority letter that hit the web last week thanks to the Delta Gammas at the University of Maryland. The follow is not safe for work.
On the same day the world received a third trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness comes a brand new, full-length trailer for Man of Steel. Both are so unique, the day might be big enough for both, but we do expect more to come down the pipe shortly. CinemaCon is taking place this week which also means a trailer premiere for the Jeff Bridges-Ryan Reynolds crime comedy R.I.P.D. The point is this is going to be a big summer compared to the last few years and it is really going to make up for some lousy movies during the first three months of 2013. Just pay attention because what you are seeing in the very promising Man of Steel is just one little gem in a crowded field. Continue Reading
Classify this as peculiar yet interesting. The latest teaser promo for Man of Steel released over the weekend, revealing the plot of the next Superman movie. In it, General Zod as played by Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Shannon tells Earth to give up Kal-El aka Superman and he will leave them alone. We have heard this story before and it pretty much writes itself. Now that we know what’s going on, the trailer makes a little bit more sense although we still want to see more. Continue Reading
I do not know if this is just because of the slow start to the week in terms of industry news, but the Man of Steel TV spot seems to be getting an inordinate amount of recognition. This comes as a shock to me who has seen the first trailer multiple times already mostly because there is not a shred of new footage. Nonetheless, I join the parade of individuals hopeful that this Superman reboot is not just a facade like its direct predecessor which also had a goose bump-worthy promotional campaign. We all know how that turned out, but hey, at least Bryan Singer is finally returning to X-Men–the franchise he departed for the mother of all American superheroes. Continue Reading
Russell Crowe is one heck of a busy man lately. The actor is coming off of Les Miserables and Broken City, and soon he has to promote Man of Steel in which he plays Superman’s space dad. Beyond that, there’s a big Darren Aronofsky Noah’s Ark movie, so it is safe to say we care to hear what The Gladiator has to say about anything. He was on The Tonight Show less than 24 hours after the Academy Awards during which he performed with the cast of his Oscar-nominated musical. Hit the jump for the footage. Continue Reading
This is a very important week for studios as it is when audiences receive their first full-length look at many of the movies coming out next summer. While several flicks are yet to make their entry, the non-recurring franchises are heating up in a big, big way with a crazy level of promotion that begins now and ends in roughly six months’ time. So far, we have witnessed full-length spots for the Tom Cruise-led Oblivion, Will and Jaden Smith’s M. Night pic After Earth, The Lone Ranger, and Man of Steel. Outside of that, we still expect a longer trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness (the one-minute teaser debuted last week,) and an initial look at Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim which has mankind using giant robots to fight Godzilla-sized aliens. In other words, everything counts which becomes a huge problem when a studio somehow messes up.
An argument might be had today that Disney did just that as they began the day by premiering a longer look at their big budget western The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. The posting to iTunes occurred in the morning before the theatrical trailer dropped on Warner Bros. YouTube channel for Man of Steel –a Christopher Nolan-produced reboot to the Superman series. Immediately, blogs started gushing about that instead as it provided first looks at Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, etc. There was a lot to feed the net about this project which has instant recognition with readers. Making things worse was the lack of an official Disney embed on YouTube, so those talking about The Lone Ranger had to find third party recordings of the promo which decelerated sharing and overall journalistic dissemination. The first full theatrical trailer for Man of Steel just hit the web, giving audiences their first real hard look at Zack Snyder’s take on the Superman franchise. For the most part, this is exactly what we were expecting as Christopher Nolan’s producing credit ensured that the realistic approach to a superhero movie (if that’s possible) stayed intact throughout development of the big budget project. This movie actually means way more to Warner Bros. than anyone can really imagine at this moment as a sink or swim result is said to tie into the feasibility of Justice League movie which has already been vaguely dated for summer 2015. That said, everything hangs on whether fans buy into another Brit, in this case Henry Cavill, portraying a classic American comic book character for the second year in a row.
Today’s look at the feature provides us with glimpses at most of the main characters in costume for the first time. That includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane; Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Diane Lane as Martha Kent; Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent; and Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy. Laurence Fishburne who plays Perry White in the film was actually the only actor left in the cold here. Continue Reading
Odds are we are finally going to see a full theatrical trailer for Man of Steel in front of The Hobbit in ten days’ time, but while fans of Superman wait they can at least take a gander at a new poster. This one has the superhero in handcuffs which plays into what director Zack Snyder told the press about the film: they (him and producer Christopher Nolan) wanted to do a movie that would tackle how the world would react if the character were real. Apparently, they would lock him up for whatever reason which we have all seen before numerous times. Usually, such circumstances take place on the protagonist’s own accord and he can break out whenever he chooses.
The last time we have seen such a gimmick was 2008′s Hancock and hopefully it is not as tiring as ‘things went bad without him, so let’s release the man of steel.’ However, it is because of those reasons and the strange look of his captors that we believe it might actually be some henchman belonging to Michael Shannon’s General Zod instead. We will soon find out what the deal is, but for now feel free to speculate. Continue Reading
Surprise, surprise. Man of Steel will indeed make it to theaters in 3D and IMAX. This news follows the assumed lack of glasses option thanks to Christopher Nolan’s involvement behind-the-scenes as producer. It also comes months after a leaked advertisement that said the new Superman movie would indeed have premium tickets for BOTH technologies. Warner Bros. was quick to label that as a mistake, so while we feel that the studio could have changed their minds (particularly when seeing the lackluster performance of movies that forego 3D) it is also thought that consumers might have been lied to intentionally to protect today’s big reveal. Of course, it would not be the first time such an occurrence transpired. Continue Reading
With The Dark Knight Rises now half way through its theatrical run, it probably is not too early to look to the future of the superhero genre. 2013 promises to offer four such features with Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, The Wolverine, and Thor: The Dark World in that order. This will be the second time four major superhero releases lined up like this, so we know the industry can take it. The only question is whether or not these offerings will hold a candle to the trio of A-grade offerings we saw this year in the form of The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises.
