Reese Witherspoon to Reunite with Joaquin Phoenix for ‘Inherent Vice’

mud reese witherspoonReese Witherspoon is on a bit of a roll. The indie film Mud at the end of last month in which she starred as the love interest opposite Matthew McConaughey seems to have given the Oscar-winner a lot of attention (outside of the tabloids of course.) Her earlier additions were Keanu Reeves’ Passengers and a Walk the Line reunion with James Mangold called Three Little Words. This one comes from Paul Thomas Anderson (his follow-up to The Master) and will symbolize another Walk the Line reunion, now with Joaquin Phoenix. The pic is called Inherent Vice based on a novel by Thomas Pychon. It is a 1970s-set film about a detective investigating the disappearance of an ex-girlfriend.

Reese Witherspoon to Reunite with ‘Walk the Line’ Director

mud reese witherspoonIt looks like James Mangold is not gearing up to do another Wolverine sequel. The Walk the Line director is busy setting up his follow-up gig, and it appears to be another Reese Witherspoon-starrer. The film is called Three Little Words, and it will signify an Oscar-winning re-team. Its Legally Blonde star notably won the Oscar for their previous pairing in which she played the role of June Carter Cash opposite Joaquin Phoenix.

This project is quite different though as it is an adaptation of a NYT bestseller from author Ashley Rhodes-Courter. Its plot centers on a Florida girl lost in the child welfare system. A paid volunteer (Witherspoon) discovers her, and they embark on a journey to kick start the girl’s life by getting her biological mother to release her parental rights. Lewis Colick and Michael Petroni wrote the feature adaptation. Principal photography is eyed for a fall start.

Reese Witherspoon to Join Keanu in Sci-Fi ‘Passengers’

mud reese witherspoonReese Witherspoon is making some waves after the release of her low-budget indie Mud. The actress has just signed on for a sci-fi love story called Passengers that first came to our attention a few weeks ago. Her role will be that of the prematurely-thawed companion of Reeves after a malfunction on a ship woke his character from cryo-sleep decades before his intergalactic journey was complete. THR broke the story Thursday afternoon where they say talks remain early on, but they seem to suggest it should go through. Witherspoon can next be seen in Devil’s Knot and The Good Lie.

Reese Witherspoon Movie Clip for ‘Mud,’ Opens in Select Theaters Friday

Hot off her arrest, Reese Witherspoon has a new film coming out this weekend called Mud. The actress co-stars in the feature with Matthew McConaughey who plays a fugitive trying to reunite with his long-lost love. Reviews for the drama call say its a winner thus today’s acknowledgement via some sneak peek footage. Mud begins its limited release on April 26.

Updated: Reese Witherspoon Arrested Prior to Release of Her New Movie ‘Mud’

reese witherspoon mudThere is not much to this story, but it is worth digesting for shear box office impact. Reese Witherspoon and her CAA agent husband Jim Toth have landed themselves in the slammer after a night of drinking. The story hit tabloids all across the country Sunday evening, and the reason I make note of this is because the Academy Award-winner (who was merely a belligerent passenger to Toth’s DUI) has a new limited release feature coming out this Friday called Mud.

The PG-13 drama stars Witherspoon as the love interest opposite Matthew McConaughey. Hailing from director Jeff Nichols, the pic is about two teens who encounter a fugitive (McConaughey) as he attempts to reunite with his true love. This is a limited release that was expected to gain exposure from word of mouth. Rotten Tomatoes is bullish on the pic (currently at 96%) as the effort is yet another gem from its leading man who has picked enough good movies over these past few years to make up for his rom-com past.

Witherspoon was supposed to be part of the film’s promotion going forward with an appearance on Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night. It now remains unclear whether she will follow through with the stop by knowing full well she would have to address the elephant in the room. My money is on ‘no,’ but then again it could prove to be a good way to rip off the band-aid.

Update: Reese Witherspoon has responded via a statement through her publicist:

“Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”

The comments about ‘the things’ she said are in reference to her allegedly using the celeb-card to try to get out of a jam.

Paul Feig in Negotiations for Reese Witherspoon’s “Wish List”

Reese Witherspoon has reentered the news lately as it looks like her next film has finally found its director in Bridesmaid’s Paul Feig.  The movie is called Wish List and it will star the Academy Award-winning actress as a woman who is faced with the prospects of having all her childhood wishes come true at once.  While tainted by an unoriginal idea, the addition of Feig to the crew will undoubtedly go a long way in squelching those fears.

For those not in the know, Feig’s credits include the Kristen Wiig-penned Bridesmaids along with a contingent of well-received small screen comedies ranging from episodes of Arrested Development to The Office.  Perhaps he is best known though for creating the short-lived comedy Freaks and Geeks which starred three future movie stars in the form of James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel.

Aside from having a proven director, Wish List has a script from Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger.  These two co-wrote the Kung Fu Panda movies as well as the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel efforts.  They are also responsible for 2009′s Monsters vs. Aliens which featured Witherspoon’s voice as the lead character, so there is the tie-in that possibly lead to them working on their latest collaboration.

Look for production on Wish List to begin shortly.

“This Means War” Backs Off Valentine’s Day Release

This Means War starring Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy, and Chris Pine was supposed to hit theaters on Valentine’s Day.  The problem?  Early box office tracking was showing this particular movie was weak compared to the February 10th offerings that are presumed to be the big rivals for the action-rom com on February 14.  The new date is now February 17, so prospective movie goers will have to wait three more days to witness Captain Kirk in CIA-mode.

Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon Are Set to Co-Star in West Memphis 3 Film

Deadline is reporting that Colin Firth has joined Devil’s Knot alongside Reese Witherspoon.  The Atom Egoyan-directed feature is about the West Memphis 3 and based on a 2003 book by investigative reporter Mara Leveritt.  Firth will be tasked with the role of private investigator Ron Lax which is an important part in the film as Lax was an early supporter of the trio’s innocence.  On the other end of things, Witherspoon will be playing Pam Hobbs, a mother of one of the accused.

For those unfamiliar with the West Memphis 3, the title is in reference to the three men who were put on trial for the murder of three 8-year-old boys in 1993.  Many believed the defendants (who were sentenced to life behind bars) were truly innocent, and they were eventually released from prison last August due to new DNA evidence that came to light four years prior.
