‘Resident Evil 5′ Debuts Larger Than ‘Afterlife’ Overseas

The Resident Evil franchise continues to grow bigger overseas.  Aided by its monopoly on 3D content, Resident Evil: Retribution debuted in 50 foreign markets to $49.6 million with Japan leading the international nod via a staggering $11.2 million on their end of things.  Russia and Taiwan were also key markets leading to 25% growth over the same area last time out. ‘Resident Evil’ Bests ‘Finding Nemo’ Friday for Box Office Gold

This weekend’s box office report is met with two new arrivals in the form of Resident Evil: Retribution and Find Nemo 3D.  It was certainly interesting to hear that Retribution surpassed its predecessor After Life in midnight showings with over $660k brought in for the late night debut, but the question throughout Friday was whether it would have enough love from fans and potential first-timers to make the fifth Resident Evil movie a legitimate hit.

The short is ‘no,’ but it did manage to win the weekend with the best opening day since mid-August’s release of The Expendables 2.  Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest offering in the saga banked $8.4 million on Friday which compares unfavorably to the $10.7 million the franchise debuted to two years ago.  Considering reviews were not very kind, to expect a bump probably would be too much, but nonetheless Resident Evil still has enough cachet to make the rest of September look foolish.  Expect a $20 million weekend from the action horror flick. Hollywood Turns to ‘Finding Nemo’ and ‘Resident Evil’ to Save September

We are about to embark on a very important weekend for box office results.  The task is almost certainly an uphill battle deemed impossible to pull off, but we will witness it anyways as the wheels must keep turning in Hollywood as time continues to count down to more big budget offerings in November and December.  The mission?  To salvage September and to follow-up the industry’s worst week since the 9/11 terrorist attacks with some moderate growth in movie ticket sales.

On paper, things look destined to succeed as theatergoers will be treated to two new arrivals with some definite cachet:  Resident Evil: Retribution and Finding Nemo 3D.  Each respective film has a unique audience and loyal followings, so it would appear that the industry is about to rebound a tad on the heels of familiar franchises which might be important considering these are the months when holiday movie hype first begins to proliferate. New ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Featurette Chronicles Alice Versus Umbrella

One of the barriers to jumping right in the middle of a franchise (particularly one that is vastly improved) is the interconnected plotlines with any given film’s direct predecessors.  Thankfully, prospective moviegoers for Resident Evil: Retribution should not be having that problem come fall as there is a new featurette out chronicling the constant battle between Alice (Milla Jovovich) and the evil Umbrella Corporation.
