Christoph Waltz has got a new gig. The actor has just joined Stephen Gaghan’s action thriller Candy Store in a role opposite Robert De Niro. The film also stars Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke and The Intouchables’ Omar Sy, making this movie something to watch going forward. Gaghan, whose credits also include Syriana, wrote the script for this one as well. For those unfamiliar with the project, Candy Store centers on an undercover agent beginning a new life as a beat cop in Brooklyn when his past comes back to haunt him.
Robert De Niro, a notoriously tough interviewee, was on The Tonight Show last night. Having been disappointed by his previous appearances, there was a little bit less hype behind this one especially considering how his career has fizzled out in recent years. Not to worry though as he still is a living legend who happens to be up for an Academy Award this year for his supporting role in Silver Linings Playbook. He may not win but there is a sense of normalcy in Hollywood as the Raging Bull star has not seen such recognition in decades. Hit the jump for the Leno appearance. Continue Reading
Remember that Robert De Niro/Matt Damon movie about the birth of the CIA? Well, the 2006 spy film The Good Shepherd appears to be Showtime-bound now as De Niro’s production company has sold a television adaptation of the film to the premium network. Furthermore, the legendary actor is set to executive produce and direct. The feature film’s director Eric Roth is on board as well as he is set to executive produce in addition to writing the series. The first theatrical trailer has arrived for the Justin Zackhman-directed comedy The Big Wedding. This film is about a long-divorced couple played by Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton who pretend to still be married for the sake of a family wedding. Its trailer pretty much hammers out the details beyond that, so take a look to get a sense of what we are really looking at here.
The supporting cast is pretty hefty with Amanda Seyfried, Katherine Heigl, Topher Grace, and Robin Williams. Williams will be playing Father Monaghan which should seem very familiar as he pretty much shot the exact same scenes for License to Wed, but it in all fairness that film had the actor playing a Reverend. Today brings with it word of yet another Robert De Niro starring project. The legendary actor has continued to add to his resume in recent months with a slew of projects ranging from small to big, so we are not exactly surprised that he is now officially in negotiations to join Grudge Match alongside Sylvester Stallone.
This film is a boxing movie from Tommy Boy director Peter Segal meaning this is a comedy. While the world is saturated with dramatic turns on the sub-genre, there lacks a comedic take on the sport which will be provided by Entourage scribe Doug Ellin. That is enough to get many excited about Grudge Match in itself, but seeing how this will pair the two actors who helped define such movies, the feature is being regarded as more than a subtle footnote on one’s IMDB profile.
As for how this fits in the grand scheme of De Niro’s career, this movie will join two comedies already on the actor’s table, Last Vegas and The Comedian. The former has been talked about quite frequently in the press as of late because the effort comes from National Treasure director Jon Turtletaub and sets the actor alongside Morgan Freeman and Michael Douglas in a ‘Hangover with old people’-type bachelor party film. The Comedian appears to be just as interesting though as De Niro will be taking direction from Sean Penn.
For those of you curious about Stallone, he is set to star in the sequel to The Expendables which is due out in August along with The Tomb which also stars Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Robert De Niro was in-studio for the March 14th edition of Today to promote his newest film, and here is the interview with the Being Flynn actor. You may notice that rather than the typical one-on-one sit-down it is a group effort this time around. De Niro is pretty much notorious for being a tough interviewee, so I cannot help be assume this is far from coincidence. Good call, producers.
