Say what you want about RIPD, but the film is going to make a killing come July at the box office (pun not intended.) The film about the Rest In Peace Department based on a graphic novel has been criticized for being aMen in Black knock off; however, we should not kid ourselves here and say that this looks a whole lot better than Barry Sonnenfeld’s trilogy. Jeff Bridges appears excellent in the Tommy Lee Jones-type veteran role while Ryan Reynolds looks sufficient. Here is a new poster to add to the hype. Not the absence of a date. It has long been expected it or Red 2 would bounce from the weekend they share two months from now as two action comedies might be a stretch for even summer box office standards. Continue Reading
Ryan Reynolds is capitalizing on all that buzz surrounding R.I.P.D.The trailer alone screams hit (or knockoff depending on who you ask,) and that means one thing–studios all want Reynolds’ talents immediately. First on deck appears to be a film directed by Immortals helmer Tarsem for Film District. The project is titled Selfless and it comes from Carriers scribes Alex and David Pastor. This is a thriller about an older man who pays to have his mind transplanted to a younger man’s body. The catch is the body was that of a murder victim whose assailants want to see dead all over again.
The much-loved talents of Anna Kendrick have found a home through a new film. Quickly running out of projects, the 50/50 star added The Voices to her upcoming slate. She joins the Marjane Satrapi-directed production opposite Ryan Reynolds along with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters actress Gemma Arterton. This pic is billed as a psychological thriller that has Reynolds playing a bathtub factory worker with a crush on the girl in accounting. I am seeing phrases like evil “talking” cat and benevolent “talking” dog in Deadline’s post on the matter, suggesting a bit of a Wilfred vibe as the two’s relationship is said to take a “murderous turn.”
Anna Kendrick was most-recently seen in the Robert Redford pic The Company You Keep and last year’s found-footage cop drama End of Watch as well as Pitch Perfect. Her next movie is a horror comedy called Rapture-Palooza releasing in June. You can catch the red-band trailer for that one right here.
Well, here is a pleasant surprise. Universal’s big-budget action comedy R.I.P.D. looks better than expected–a lot better. The trailer for the film just hit the web and we are already seeing why the studio is opting for the 3D upgrade. It really is Men in Black for the undead. Its smarter, funnier, and everything better so there is absolutely no reason to suspect a less than half-billion box office play.
That said, here is the first trailer which is paired up with this week’s Oblivion where a whole lot of people are certain to get excited for director Robert Schwentke’s follow-up to Red. Fun fact: right now R.I.P.D. is scheduled to go head-to-head with the sequel to Schwentke’s last film. Expect the latter to move though as its competition looks like a strong number one debut. It’s teaser time for DreamWorks Animation’s follow-up to The Croods which comes four months later. Thisone has a snail voiced by Ryan Reynolds with dreams of becoming the fastest of his species. Under the title Turbo, the movie is directed by David Soren (Merry Madagascar) who wrote the script with Robert D. Siegel (The Wrestler) and Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After.) In other words, the script should be pretty capable which explains why this one gets the often-lucrative mid-summer release. Continue Reading
Just a few days ago, it hit the news wires that Ryan Reynolds was eyeing a thriller from Paranormal Activity writer Michael R. Perry titled The Voices, but it looks like that will not be his next project now as this afternoon he has joined Jon Favreau’s Battle for Bonneville. The actor is currently in final negotiations to star in the true story about land speed record holders, Art and Walt Arfons. Continue Reading
Two months ago, it was announced the Ryan Reynolds would be joining Atom Egoyan’s psychological thriller Queen of the Night and today we are hearing the actor is ‘circling’ a like-genre’d project. The film at the center of today’s story is called The Voices from director Marjane Satrapi and Paranormal Activity scribe Michael R. Perry.
If Reynolds climbs on board, he will play Jerry Hickfang, a factory worker trying to gain the attention of a female co-worker. The thriller aspect of all this is what has been described as a “murderous turn.” Oh, and it should be noted that his character has an evil cat and benevolent dog who both have a firm grasp on the English language. It seems that fans of Daniel Espinosa’s Safe House have not seen the last of Denzel Washington’s Tobin Frost after all. Word has hit tonight that the studio behind the pic (Universal) has hired writer David Guggenheim to draft a sequel to the CIA action thriller. Guggenheim most recently completed work on Simon West’s Nicolas Cage-starrer Stolen, but he also drafted the original Safe House which should appease many people looking for the same high-octane vibe. Staying busy as always, Ryan Reynolds has added yet another project to his jam-packed slate. This one is called Queen of the Night and it is a psychological thriller from Devil’s Knot director Atom Egoyan. The project will have the Green Lantern star playing a father that discovers a series of disturbing clues several years after his daughter is abducted, making him believe that she might still be alive.
While the director had many positive things to say about Reynolds, he did mention specifically his work in Safe House and Buried which are the actor’s latest thrillers. These types of roles seem to be his bread and butter, so I completely understand what Egoyan is saying. It is a shame parts like this are not exactly growing off trees because Reynolds would probably own the genre as opposed to be forced into sputtering inside the realms of comedy and actioners. Lionsgate-Summit is hell bent on creating some tentpole franchises with their new-found Hunger Games capital, and one of them would appear to be Highlander. A report has surfaced just yesterday that the studio is in talks with Ryan Reynolds to take over the franchise as the title character. Continue Reading
The first reviews for Safe House are starting to pour out and the split between negative and positive reviews for this Denzel Washington-lead thriller is currently even as far as Rotten Tomatoes goes. Despite the divisive early response, critics are all agreeing with one thing: Denzel Washington is awesome in his latest theatrical effort.
Many of the flaws being mentioned in Safe House are centered around its action-heavy format. The ‘thumbs down’ attitudes are being driven primarily by disdain for a movie which features nothing new to the genre. As a result, this feature is being called ‘forgettable’ and is receiving criticism for lacking any real danger. Another big gripe is that this is a hamburger with no meat. In other words, critics are finding the middle of the movie to be far weaker than the beginning and end.
What is good about this movie is that it is your classic Denzel Washington movie. People are loving his performance, and they only wish he was used a bit more. With plenty of action, fans of the genre will likely be getting exactly what they expect if they go see Safe House…at least according to reviewers.
Ryan Reynolds was on Today this morning to promote his new film Safe House in which he co-stars alongside Denzel Washington. Here is the full sit-down interview with Matt Lauer where the conversation was centered around the thriller.
Check out this brand new featurette from Yahoo! Movie with Denzel Washington talked about his character in Safe House. The movie which also stars Ryan Reynolds, Brendon Gleeson and Vera Farmiga hits theaters on February 10.
Several media outlets are running with the story today that Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon are now attached to the indie film, Big Eyes. The movie is based on the story of Margaret and Walter Keane who rose to the fame with their kitsch paintings of large-eyed children in the middle of last century. This will of course be a period feature and the two leading actors will naturally be playing the central couple.
Both actors have new movies coming out shortly. Reese Witherspoon stars alongside Chris Pine (Unstoppable) and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) in This Means War which is due out on Valentine’s Day, and Ryan Reynolds’ next film is Safe House starring Denzel Washington. With the latter releasing the preceding Friday, the two will likely be in competition with one another.
