Showtime Expected to Cancel ‘The Borgias’ After Season 3

the borgiasI hate to mention when I predicted something, but it is inevitable. It turns out I was 100% right when it came to the fate of The Borgias over on Showtime. Despite the show’s fantastic portrayal of period politics in Western Europe, it never seemed to find viewership beyond that of The Tudors. This was unfortunate because nowadays when a drama on the premium network finds only half a million viewers or less, it sticks out like a sore thumb. DexterHomeland, and Shameless all perform wildly better which is why it has become apparent that after their contemporary-set Ridley Scott Vatican drama launches next year, Borgias could be on its way out. The news on that end today is that it looks highly probable the show will not receive a fourth season renewal. It instead is likely get a two-hour movie to wrap things up much like we recently saw with The Big C and that will be that. The good news is that Jeremy Irons has suddenly become available.

Dexter Star Michael C. Hall to Back Period Hollywood Drama for Showtime

dexterIn regards to the run-up to the final season of Dexter, a lot of the questions have been around what Michael C. Hall (a long-time vet of the small screen) would do next. Many thought a feature career could be a natural progression for the Golden Globe-winner; however, we have seen many stars migrate the other way to serialized programming in recent years. Hall went as far as to say he was open to anything, even a return to leading man status on a television program as he nodded to the ‘interesting things’ happening on the medium at this time.

Well, today’s news from THR says the Dexter player has signed on to executive produce a new Showtime drama based on author Matthew Specktor’s American Dream Machine. The show will be about 1970s Hollywood and will move back and forth to modern times. While Hall is not signed on to star in the program (at least not yet,) this illustrates his comments are to be taken seriously about his fondness for the television drama.

Scott Buck, a Dexter showrunner, is said to be supervising the script which tells the story of a talent agent and his troubled sons. My concern here is the father-son dynamic which is obviously at the center of this and so is its West Coast backdrop. Showtime already has a series like that coming out this summer, ironically paired with Dexter called Ray Donovan from the outside of the business. The title character, played by Liev Schreiber, is a fixer for the LA elite which includes Hollywood players. A major pillar to that particular series is his relationship with his criminal father (Jon Voight.)

More Family & More Jon Voight in Second ‘Ray Donovan’ Trailer

jon voight ray donovanThere is a brand-new Ray Donovan trailer to look at today. It seems like the marketing materials for Showtime’s latest drama have been endless thus far, but now that several more non-pilot episodes are in the can, there is new footage to explore. For the most part, those scenes seem centered on an extended relationship between Ray (Liev Schreiber) and his father played by Jon Voight. Perhaps we should grow to expect him to have a much bigger part in this series than originally thought. There is still no James Woods though even as he is set to recur throughout the series’ freshman run. Continue Reading

New Footage Debuts in Full-Length TV Trailer for ‘Ray Donovan’

liev schreiber ray donovanShowtime has already started up the marketing campaign for the finale season of Dexter, but lost in the shroud of the premium network’s top program drawing to a close has been the on-going buzz for its summer pairing. A new trailer with ‘some’ never-before-seen footage of Ray Donovan has hit the web hoping to capitalize on the fandom of Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight as the story of a fixer for LA’s elite looks to be the channel’s future. I must admit, it does look nice thus far but this is mostly pilot footage at the moment so our praise is said with a bit of cautious optimism. Go ahead and take a look to judge for yourself. Is Showtime Eyeing A ‘Dexter’ Spin-Off? Final Season Suggests Decision To Be Made

dexterWith the promos now running for the final season of Dexter, it is time to talk spin-offs for the Miami-based serial killer drama. When it was first announced two years ago that the show was ending its run in a few years, it was hard to imagine Showtime would give up their top-rated drama without a fight. Homeland changed that as it inevitably grew every bit as potent as its Michael C. Hall-led series and then some, opening the door to the possibility that Dexter’s premium network home would let it exit without too much extracurricular fanfare.

That hardly appears to be the case as now come rumblings that a sidebar series could be in the works with any number of characters from the widely-watched program–at least network execs will not rule it out. The problem with such a gimmick is the lack of the property’s trademark allure and that leads us to believe that any expectations could live in spoiler territory. There is not much news to go off of, but there was word a few weeks ago that Chuck actress Yvonne Strahovski would be returning to the show in a rare recurrence for a guest character. Perhaps she could take up Dexter’s dark passenger in a different light, carrying it beyond Miami as she escapes from almost certain lifelong imprisonment. Maybe Dexter is caught and confesses to her crimes as the series-ender promises closure.

The other options lay with Angel, Masuka, or Debra Morgan which are almost certainly all bad choices. There really is not much to latch onto at this point in time without thinking of a spin-off in tone. Would the network be comfortable with a similar-minded series set in another major market with all-new characters? Dexter’s trip to the country to chase a target a while back was not exactly embraced by viewers. Hopefully, more will come to light in the coming months when Dexter starts its eighth season run on Sunday, June 30.

First TV Promo for ‘Dexter’ Season 8
