Weekend Box Office Report for June 15-17: ‘Madagascar 3′ Crushes New Arrivals

This past weekend can be best described as a mixed bag as audiences witnessed the release of two flops in the face of strong retention from last week’s field.   Continue Reading

Adam Sandler and Tom Cruise Lose Big to ‘Madagascar’ on Friday

The Friday estimates are now in, and it would appear that star power is not exactly what it used to be in Hollywood.  At least that seems to be the general theme of the report today.  Despite Adam Shankman’s efforts to assemble an all-star cast for his musical Rock of Ages, the film only debuted to $5.4 million which is well below what analysts expected going into the weekend.

Even with this tremendous disappointment, the weekend saw worse as Adam Sandler’s That’s My Boy premiered to $4.6 million which is absolutely terrible.  This suggests an opening weekend in the low teens which is roughly half of what some were anticipating.

Just a word of caution though, these stars were out of their element in both features so this is not exactly a clear sign that audiences have had enough of either.  File these efforts in the ‘forgettable’ category.  The true test for Sandler will likely come next year with Grown Ups 2 which is currently shooting.

Here are the rest of the top ten including the top dogs of Madagascar 3 and Prometheus which also reigned over last week’s data.

1.  Madagascar 3 - $10 M / $95.0 M

2.  Prometheus $5.8 M / $74.5 M

3.  Rock of Ages $5.4 M / $5.4 M

4.  That’s My Boy $4.6 M / $4.6 M

5. Snow White and the Huntsman - $4 M / $112.8 M

6. Men in Black 3 $2.8 M / $145.5 M

7. The Avengers $2.2 M / $580.1 M

8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $0.6 M / $33.6 M

9.  Moonrise Kingdom $0.6 M / $5.2 M

10. What to Expect When You’re Expecting $0.4 M / $37.9 M

Andy Samberg Interviewed in Chicago on ‘Conan’

Andy Samberg was kind enough to fly all the way to Chicago to take part in Conan’s week of shows there in order to promote his new film.  The movie is called That’s My Boy, and it is the R-rated comedy return of Adam Sandler that fans have been wanting.  While the jury is still out on whether people will show up to see the picture in theaters, it is at least garnering a lot more respect than Jack and Jill did less than a year ago.

Here are some clips from Samberg’s appearance on Tuesday’s show.

Andy Samberg Talks ‘SNL’ Exit On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

The first talk show appearance post-SNL for Andy Samberg took place last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live.  The long-time Saturday Night Live cast member recently quit the show in the hopes of parlaying his latest theatrical effort into a much bigger film career than the actor has had in the past.  Samberg is already set to appear in Grown Ups 2 and voice a character in Sony’s Hotel Transylvania, but last night’s talk show appearance had more to do with the soon-to-release That’s My Boy which has the actor co-starring alongside Adam Sandler.  The film hits theaters in just over a week.

Topics of conversation included Andy’s recent departure from SNL and his new film.

New Theatrical Trailer for Adam Sandler’s “That’s My Boy”

It certainly appears like Adam Sandler is going back to his roots somewhat in That’s My Boy–the actor’s next comedy in which he co-stars alongside SNL cast member Andy Samberg.  The movie is already generating a lot of early love as it appears to be the actor in a vintage mode that he has not shown off since the 90′s.  It will be the first feature from Sandler to sport an R-rating since 2009′s Funny People which was much more serious in tone, so it will be very interesting to see how the movie performs seeing how the mature rating is almost a badge of honor for any comedy in a post-Hangover world.  June 15th is when That’s My Boy lands in theaters nationwide.
