Joss Whedon, aka captain of the ship, seemed unenthused to say the least when IGN asked him about the rumor point blank during press for his Shakespearian comedy Much Ado About Nothing. His response was as follows: “Um, well, I’m really not supposed to comment, but no, that’s nonsense.” The footage after the jump.

Update 3/7: Mark Ruffalo also calls these Planet Hulk rumors hogwash as any standalone feature would be news to him.

Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo. Previously revealed for the occasion were Meryl Streep, Seth MacFarlane’s Ted, and Mark Wahlberg among others.

“We are happy to re-unite the Avengers cast to present on our show,” said Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “Audiences who enjoyed the year’s biggest box office hit will be excited to see these terrific actors back together again.”

Downey has twice been nominated for an Oscar, for his leading role in Chaplin (1992) and for his supporting role in Tropic Thunder (2008).

Evans, who will be making his first Oscar show appearance, will be seen in the upcoming The Iceman.

Ruffalo received his first nomination for his supporting role in 2010 Best Picture nominee The Kids Are All Right.

Oscars® for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane live on the ABC Television Network.

A production budget does a lot of things for a film. It makes things shinier, pays for the best actors, and serves as the bar for any studio attempting profitability at the box office. Because of that last part, many have jumped to criticize this year’s crop of blockbusters, calling them simply overpriced at times as they sometimes made it very tough for studios to actually make money in a relatively difficult climate. Ultimately, most of the bigger bets paid off this year which should provide a huge sigh of relief for those who could not keep a lid on the coffers.

Here is a list of the priciest bets that Hollywood placed this past year. For those not in the know, the general rule is two times production cost plus marketing to make it into the black. While studios seldom give details specific to marketing, you can assume $60 to $125 million for most of the following.

10. Wreck-It Ralph (November 2)

Animated films do incredibly well so the Mouse House’s decision to bet big on another one should not come off as too surprising. The pic managed to do respectable business by November launch standards, but it definitely was the most expensive effort to come out of the month by a comfortable margin as many respect the period for what it is: the last 30 days in the typical fall slowdown that just happens to feature 48 hours of hope in the form of the Thanksgiving break. Naturally, things did not pan out the way Disney wanted as Wreck-It Ralph may have to make some of its investment back through retail–something animated films are more than capable of doing.

Cost: $165 Million

Global Gross to Date: $239.9 Million

9. Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1)

It is rarely a wise decision for a studio to race to make a film in under a year on a mammoth budget, but that is precisely what Universal did concerning their newest blockbuster franchise, Snow White and the Huntsman. As recently as July 2011, the stars of the film were stumping at Comic-Con for this film without a single frame of footage being shot. Thankfully, rookie commercial director Rupert Sanders had what it took to make a visually impressive film that used every bit of the blockbuster’s budget. Because of that, this one is getting a sequel.

Cost: $170 M

Global Gross: $396.4 Million

8. Brave (June 22)

Perhaps seeing some risk in having a female protagonist, Pixar lowered their budget a tad from prior efforts for their first new property since 2009′s Up. The movie’s average quality left many fearing that the studio may have lost their magic, but the reality is that audiences did not care as this animated offering still found over half a billion worldwide. Its no Toy Story 3, but then again neither was Cars 2.

Cost: $180 M

Global Gross: $535.3 Million

7. Battleship (May 18)

Universal lost a lot of money on Battleship. This is something that the studio saw becoming maybe the next Transformers or something just as good, but what they failed to realize is that naval warfare movies alone are expensive and that adding huge amounts of CGI to the mix does not exactly help. The end result was a bloated action film that fell flat with audiences. Some may blame the release calendar (two weeks after The Avengers,) but ultimately it was the incomplete filmmaking of director Peter Berg that did this disaster movie in. While Taylor Kitsch was deemed by critics as the actioner’s saving grace, it will forever go down as a low-light for the Friday Night Lights actor’s career.

Cost: $209 M

Global Gross: $302.8 M

6. Men in Black 3 (May 25)

A bloated budget due to lengthy production delays made it difficult for the third Men in Black movie to make its money back. Being on the receiving end of one of the largest marketing budgets of the year, it seemed like this one was destined to see red; however, a huge international response for the return of Will Smith made this action comedy a winner. Many still speculate as to how much money MiB 3 could have reasonably made under these circumstances, but apparently it is good enough for another round of underground alien hunting as the wheels look to be spinning for a possible fourth (and cheaper) installment of the franchise.

Cost: $215 M

Gross: $624.0 M

5. The Avengers (May 4)

The biggest surprise of the year was just how potent The Avengers was at the box office. Expectations from Disney were hovering in the $600-700 million range as they anticipated something on par with the Iron Man movies, but it shattered that mark as it rode a record-breaking $207 million opening weekend to become the third highest-grossing film of all-time. This was a huge win for the studio as it validated their $4 billion purchase of Marvel Studios and for many its success was seen as the single biggest factor in clinching a deal to bring Lucasfilm under Cinderella’s Castle in a similar-sized deal which just closed last week.

Cost: $220 M

Global Gross: $1.51 B

4. The Amazing Spider-Man (July 3)

Sony was rolling the dice when they bounced from Sam Raimi’s corner to reboot their top superhero property in 3D. While the director made pricier films, his replacement Marc Webb chose to lean on emotions with modern character-based storytelling, and that paid off in a big way. Even though the overall gross may have been down from the franchise’s first trilogy, this effort managed to impress a whole lot of people by showing audiences will indeed accept a re-do a mere decade after first hitting the silver screen.

Cost: $225-230 M

Global Gross: $752.2

3. The Dark Knight Rises (July 20)

At the time The Dark Knight played in theaters, the movie was the second biggest film to ever play at the North American box office, so its sequel was given a budget to reflect that. Before tax credits, Christopher Nolan’s trilogy capper cost anywhere from $250 to $300 million, making it one of the most expensive films of the year overall. While expectations were certainly higher given the success of The Avengers, WB still made a mountain of money as the pic managed to outdo its predecessor thanks to a surge in foreign receipts.

Cost: $230 M (with tax credits)

Global Gross: $1.08 B

2. John Carter (March 9)

John Carter will forever go down as the final pin that sunk Disney studio head Rick Ross’ career. The movie came one year after a similar flop in Mars Needs Moms, and many questioned the expansion of this film’s marketing budget ($100 million+) after tracking suggested the film would flop. Because of these instances, he was fired a few weeks prior to The Avengers and replaced with someone who would hopefully bring dignity back to the Mouse House’s March releases.

Cost: $250 M

Global Gross: $282.8 M

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December 14)

The second most expensive film of all time is expected to go down as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-Earth comes in trilogy form which makes this a tad misleading, but ultimately if this pic were standalone in nature, $270 million is what it would cost to set up the crew, costumes, etc. in New Zealand for this Lord of the Rings prequel. Warner Bros. probably is not sweating the cost too much though as they are well aware The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again should each come in below $200 million.

Cost: $270 M

Global Gross to Date: $433.9 M

This bit of news should not come off as surprising to those following every bit of Avengers news that slips out of Marvel Studios. Nick Fury will not be appearing in Iron Man 3 or Thor: The Dark World for that matter. While the former was confirmed by studio head Kevin Feige at the beginning of the week, the latter was still in question. Basically, Samuel L. Jackson’s next turn as the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Seeing how we already knew about Scarlett Johansson and Cobie Smulders reprising their roles as The Black Widow and Maria Hill respectfully, this was very much expected to be the case.

In a sense, today’s publication of this news straight from the actor’s mouth courtesy of Total Film is proliferating for confirmation purposes. There are a flood of rumors revolving around these comic book properties in the run-up to production, and it is always good to get something squarely identifying as ‘happening.’ The most high-profile one that got quite a few believers was that Maria Hill would be in the next Iron Man movie simply because the How I Met Your Mother actress who plays her tweeted out she was in North Carolina during the same time of the film’s production. It turns out she was simply there shooting a much smaller project called Safe Haven.

As for the information in itself, let’s just sit back and realize for a second what it means for the series going forward. In a sense, Marvel Studios is coming out and saying that they do not truly believe Captain America will lure in audiences like its other properties, and it may need help to keep on ticking. We accept this notion plainly because in a way it is a complete reboot.

The premiere outing in the Chris Evans-led saga took place during World War II in the 1940′s whereas The Winter Soldier is a contemporary take on the superhero complete with a new sidekick (Falcon played by Anthony Mackie) as well as a yet to be cast love interest. No one knows for sure if the Marvel faithful will buy into ‘anything Avengers’ or if any post-Joss Whedon bump might be exclusive to Thor and Iron Man. We will find out on April 4, 2014.

Before The Avengers hit theaters back in May, having Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in all of the franchise’s sub-parts was not that big of a deal. It seemed like a marketing gimmick designed to create some vein sense of attachment from film to film, so fans would feel compelled to see the lesser-respected Thor and Captain America. The low-point of all this was clearly its overt nature in Iron Man 2 which was considered to be somewhat harmful to the film’s overall quality–something that Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige would not like to see replayed with the franchise’s next outing.

Speaking with Empire, Feige shed some light on the extent of cross-pollination between The Avengers and Iron Man going forward, and what he said pretty much validates this belief. The producer basically says that no one special is showing up, and that he thinks Iron Man can carry the full load on his shoulders without the help of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“Iron Man 3 doesn’t feature any of the other Avengers, or Nick Fury showing up, or any of those world-blending conceits that the Phase One films had. You have to keep in mind that Iron Man 3 had been in the works for almost a year, year and a half before The Avengers was released. We’re sticking to the vision for these films, and showing once again that these characters are just as interesting alone as they are together.”

While some are quick to point out that he did not mention Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill, there was already a rumor generated months ago that the How I Met Your Mother star seemed to deny. The actress tweeted she was in North Carolina around the same time Iron Man 3 was shooting there, but this was for a different film. It might be best to assume that ‘world-blending conceits’ means no Maria Hill as well.

Probably a better ‘yeah, right’ take on this story would be had when looking at the plan for the obligatory mid-credits teaser. Those always feed into the next outing, and considering they are a staple of Marvel Studios offerings, it is extremely unlikely that such representation will be absent in such a scene particularly when the assumed nod will be at Thor: The Dark World releasing six months after Iron Man 3.

Iron Man 3 releases into theaters nationwide on May 3, 2013.

Those involved in the sketched were Nick Fury (Jay Pharoah,) Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner,) The Hulk (Bobby Moynihan,) Captain America (Taran Killam,) Iron Man (Jason Sudeikis,) The Black Widow (Kate McKinnon,) Thor (Bill Hader,) and Maria Hill (Vanessa Bayer.)

The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco will be hosting this year’s ceremony which will air on CBS, January 9. Voting begins today at PeoplesChoice.com.
