There is even more late night news to cover tonight, specifically that pertaining to the responses from Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon respectively. Apparently, NBC does not really care if you tune in tonight to see what they have to say because they released the monologue jokes to give us some sort of idea of just how congenial Jay plans on being about this whole thing. Perhaps there is more, but it is doubtful Leno would want to devote a lot of time on his show to that. The take away here is that Fallon has confirmed a February swap. NBC only specified Spring 2014 in their release.

Jay Leno:

Folks, I got to be honest with you, i had a really awkward day today. I had to call David Letterman and tell him he didn’t get the Tonight Show again. Awful! Terrible!

I want to congratulate our good friend Jimmy Fallon! He is a hell of a guy! He’s going to do a great job. I just have one request for Jimmy: we’ve all fought, kicked, and scratched, to get this network up to 5th place, now we have to keep it there! Jimmy, don’t let it slip into 6th! We are counting on you! We’re counting on you Jimmy.

Things move so quickly; Jimmy hasn’t even taken over yet and the rumors have already starting… like NBC says in five years they plan to replace Jimmy with Justin Bieber. They are moving too quickly! Moving too quickly!

Today I accepted a new position; I am going to be the head basketball coach at Rutgers University! Thank you very much!

Jimmy Fallon:

Hello! Welcome! This is Late Night with Jimmy Fallon…For now.

You guys probably heard the news – I’m going to be taking over the Tonight Show next February! But don’t worry. Until February, our focus is right here on whatever this show is called.
…
I want to thank everyone here at Late Night, the staff, the crew, and of course The Roots. I have to say thanks to Jay Leno for being so gracious. It means so much to me to have his support. I just want to thank the fans for staying up to 12:35am and watching us…”

CBS has released a preview for tonight’s broadcast, featuring a sizable portion of his musings on the matter. As Dave points out, NBC announced earlier today that Jay Leno would be departing his late night talk show after 22 years. That is not exactly true though as the statement merely has a target of Spring 2014 although sources tell Variety that the shift could happen the first week of March at the latest.

Jay Leno is gone from The Tonight Show starting in Spring 2014. At long last, a network announcement has been made, adding that the show will move to New York and the Late Night succession plans are still being hammered out. It has been long rumored that Seth Meyers would be taking the reins of the 12:35 am time slot with news just yesterday saying things are entering the deal-making phase for that to happen. The broadcaster reportedly wanted to get their Tonight Show plans set in stone before striking a contract with Saturday Night Live’s head writer. Sources confirm that Fallon wrapped his new deal just yesterday.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – April 03, 2013 – Jay Leno, longtime host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” announced today that he will wrap up what will be 22 years of headlining the iconic late-night show in Spring 2014. NBC also announced today that Jimmy Fallon, now host of NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” will transition into new hosting duties on “The Tonight Show” franchise after Leno concludes his successful run.

As part of the transition, “The Tonight Show” will be returning to its original home in 30 Rock in New York and will be executive-produced by Emmy Award winner Lorne Michaels (“Saturday Night Live,” “30 Rock”).

Programming plans for the 12:35 a.m. (ET) time period currently are in development and will be announced soon.

Said Leno: “Congratulations Jimmy. I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to The Job until you’re the old guy. If you need me, I’ll be at the garage.”

Said Fallon: “I’m really excited to host a show that starts today instead of tomorrow.”

“Jay Leno is an entertainment icon, making millions of people laugh every weeknight for more than 20 years,” said Steve Burke, Chief Executive Officer of NBCUniversal. “His long reign as the highest-rated late-night host is a testament to his work ethic and dedication to his viewers and to NBC.

“We are purposefully making this change when Jay is #1, just as Jay replaced Johnny Carson when he was #1. Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent and this is his time. I’m thrilled he will become the sixth host of ‘The Tonight Show’ at exactly the right moment, in conjunction with our coverage of next year’s Winter Olympic Games from Sochi, Russia.

“I also want to congratulate and thank Debbie Vickers and her ‘Tonight Show’ team for producing an entertaining, first-class show every night for the past two decades. Debbie’s role in the creative and popular success of this franchise cannot be overstated.”

Leno has hosted “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” since taking over the reins from television icon Johnny Carson in 1992.

“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” has ranked #1 ahead of its ABC and CBS time-period competition in 18-49 viewers and total viewers for each season since Leno’s return in March 2010 and for the 14 seasons before his departure in May 2009. During the current season, “Tonight” is consistently #1 versus its ABC and CBS slot rivals, averaging a 0.8 rating, 3 share in adults 18-49 and 3.5 million viewers overall.

At 12:35 a.m. ET, “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” has consistently ranked #1 in 18-49 versus the time period’s ABC and CBS competition each season since debuting in March of 2009 and has also held the advantage over CBS’s “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” in total viewers for the last three seasons. So far during the 2012-13 season, “Late Night” is averaging a 0.5 rating, 3 share in adults 18-49 and 1.7 million viewers overall.

Before Leno became the host of the top-rated “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” he honed his comedy in clubs all over the country often exceeding 300 dates per year. He opened for the likes of Tom Jones and John Denver and after moving to Los Angeles began his career in television and film, both writing behind the scenes and making appearances in shows such as “Welcome Back Kotter” and films including “American Hot Wax.” On March 2, 1977, Leno made his first appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and was named permanent guest host in 1987. While he took over the desk full-time in 1992, Leno never stopped touring on the comedy circuit and still averages over 150 gigs a year.

Emmy and Grammy Award winner, Fallon began his TV career with “Saturday Night Live” in 1998, where he quickly became an audience favorite. Known for his spot-on impressions, innovative musical and comedy sketches and his stint as co-anchor of “Weekend Update” with Tina Fey, Fallon spent six successful years on the show. In March 2009, Fallon returned to NBC and took over the late- night legacy with “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” The show has continued to garner attention for its viral videos, audience games, A-list guests, and Fallon’s choice of critically acclaimed house-band, The Roots.

In just four years on air, Fallon and the “Late Night” team have already begun collecting awards. Most recently, Fallon was honored with his second consecutive People’s Choice Award for Favorite Late Night Host (2012 and 2013) and the show received the 2012 Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Talk Show. “Late Night” was celebrated with a 2012 Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Variety Series and earned three Emmy nominations in 2011, including the show’s first nominations in the series and writing categories. The year prior, Fallon earned an Emmy for the show’s website in the Interactive Media category and received the “Webby Person of the Year” Award in 2009. Fallon received a 2013 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album after releasing “Blow Your Pants Off” in 2012, a musical comedy album featuring song parodies written and performed on “Late Night.”

This looks to be a comedy bit first and foremost, and considering it will land on April Fools’ Day, it very much could be nothing at all. Nonetheless, it is getting some attention thus the honorable mention. Check for an update with the full segment tomorrow morning.

Because this site deals with a lot of late night talk show clips, there is a highly credible news story today that we simply cannot ignore despite its unofficial nature. After a month of rumors, sources at NBC have confirmed that The Tonight Show will undergo its second hosting change inside of a decade as Jay Leno will be forced to hand over the reins to Jimmy Fallon.

Of course, this is ridiculous in the lens of what happened to Conan O’Brien a few years ago, but keep in mind that The Tonight Show’s budget under Leno at the moment is a bloated $80 million per year ($15 million of which is Leno’s salary.) Even if ratings dip to the levels that landed O’Brien off the network, it would be a win for NBC as he can produce a much cheaper show by comparison.

Let’s get our facts straight though. This is absolutely unofficial, but the trade publications who are right 99.9% of the time about this sort of thing all have their own sources confirming that this will happen and the plan is so specific right now that they are planning on moving the broadcast to New York. The only hang up at this time is when to do it as it will assuredly happen in the first half of 2014. Whether it comes in February or May, the network is yet to decide.

On a side note, THR is reporting that Fallon is reaching out to Leno because, “He was told it would be seamless and [NBC] would take care of it. He didn’t expect this.” He wants everything to be a smooth transition, but the way its unfolding this could be incredibly messy for both parties.

The Expendables sequel promotion is ramping up as Sylvester Stallone took to The Tonight Show last night to promote the movie. In addition to schooling Hollywood on the powers of ‘bigger billings,’ the actor also enlightened the world on some potential Arnold Schwarzenegger pairings he could have had when the two were in their prime.

Apparently, the only reason the duo never got together before was because of an excess of bad ideas. One idea was to have the two play detectives who dress in drag to get into a Girl’s Club of sorts. Good call, Sly. Maybe nixing this idea was as beneficial to Hollywood’s future as the actor’s contributions through Rocky.

Stallone also explained why he handed over the reins of The Expendables 2 to Simon West after directing the series’ first installment. It turns out that it was just too much work for the former Rambo player. That said, he still helped write the effort and even formulated a ‘Hunger Games for real’ part for new cast member Liam Hemsworth who he could not shut up about.

Naturally, he did not disappoint as he dished on the final scene of 21 Jump Street in which he gets his penis shot off. Apparently the whole thing was not in the script, so they had to improv it. That fooled me because the scene was comedy gold.
