USA Network is hard at work preparing for a retool as Modern Family repeats will soon dominate its schedule. They got the rights maybe a year ago, and ever since then, the topic of discussion was how they might become a comedy player as they are best known for their often-hokey dramas (don’t worry, more of those are coming.) One of the suggestions was to buy the now-cancelled former partner of the sitcom, Happy Endings. While that is still up for discussion, USA has planned some originals of their own which they are sharing today.
NEW YORK – May 16, 2013 – USA Network today greenlit its first original half-hour comedies, with series orders forSIRENS from Denis Leary (“Rescue Me”) and Bob Fisher (“Wedding Crashers”) and PLAYING HOUSE from Jessica St. Clair (“Bridesmaids,” “Best Friends Forever”) and Lennon Parham (“Best Friends Forever,” “Accidentally On Purpose”). The network also picked up a new comedy pilot, LOVE IS DEAD. The new series will debut in the first quarter of 2014, and will be strong complements to Modern Family, the award-winning and top-rated comedy, which premieres on USA Tuesday, September 24 at 8/7c. Prepare to say goodbye to Burn Notice, one of USA Network’s top original programs. The Matt Nix-created series will be ending its run after the conclusion of its 13-episode seventh season which begins June 6. There are more details via the press release that follows.
Good news for fans of USA fare. The cable network has issued a third season renewal for Necessary Roughness. Starring Rescue Me alumna Callie Thorne, the series averaged 5.3 million viewers during the recent summer which was deemed good enough for the pickup. There are more episodes slated to air this winter starting on January 23rd, suggesting this announcement was timed to create awareness before new installments make air. Look for the show’s 2013-14 season to premiere in June although an official network announcement is yet to be made concerning the matter. 
USA Network has a new mini-series coming out called Political Animals. While the premiere is still about a week away, the cable network is really hot on this as the cable channel has been touting the cast for months. 
USA Network has just announced their pick-up of Graceland to series. 
Earlier today, USA announced their 2012-13 development slate which includes the obligatory dramas, but also reality and comedy programs which is a new trick for the most-watched cable network. 
USA Network announced a new foray into reality programming today with a series hosted by former Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner. The show is called The Moment, and it centers around giving people a second chance to realize their dreams. This new series is currently scheduled to premiere sometime in the third quarter. 
It was announced earlier today via Psych’s Facebook page that the USA Network dramedy will be receiving a seventh season from its cable home. The series is watched by over 2 million viewers each week in the coveted 18-49 demographic which is why the network had no issues with extending the show further. Fans can catch the premiere of the 16-episode season later this year.
